IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram illustrates the information regarding noodles involved various steps for the manufacturing of instant noodles.
Overall, it is clear that the process consists of 8 main steps, starting with storage of flour in silos and culminating in labelling and sealing.
To begin with the storing flour in silos is the first step of manufacturing of quick noodles. Afterwards the mixture is mixed in the mixer with the addition of water and oil. Then mixture is passed on the roller to develop a proper shape. Furthermore, the mixture is converted into dough sheets. In step 4, sheets of dough are then transferred onto dough strip phase.
Afterwards, the strips converted in the form of noodle discs. These quick noodles are precooked before packing. In the step 6, the discs are partially cooked and dried and then packed in to the form of cups. Moreover, vegetables and spices are added in the cup to enhance the taste of instant noodles. Labelling and sealing is the final step of quick noodles, in which labels are attached with the cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, beginning with flour storage and concluding with labeling and sealing. An overview is provided, and key steps such as mixing, shaping into dough sheets and strips, cooking, drying, and adding vegetables and spices are reported. However, some parts of the process are somewhat under-developed or lack precise sequencing, particularly in the middle paragraphs where the transition between rollers, sheets, strips, and discs is slightly confused. To move to a higher band, the response would need to ensure a more fully extended and precise reporting of every mechanical step shown in the diagram without vague summaries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical chronological progression from the silos to the final packaging stage. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body steps. However, cohesion relies heavily on somewhat mechanical and repetitive transition markers such as 'To begin with', 'Afterwards', 'Then', and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when 'the mixture' is used ambiguously across different processing stages. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic features of the manufacturing process with terms like 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'vegetables and spices'. The writer makes some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally affected by inaccurate word choice or word formation, such as 'storing flour' used clumsily as a noun phrase or 'strips converted in the form of' instead of 'converted into'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in lexical selection and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing articles ('the storing flour', 'in step 4'), passive voice errors ('the strips converted in the form of'), and prepositional issues ('packed in to the form of'). These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede communication. To improve this criterion, the writer must exercise greater accuracy with verb forms, passive constructions, and article usage when describing technical processes.
