IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The graphic illustrates the production of instant noodles.
Overall, it is eight stage, man-made and linear process. It begins with flour, water and oil used as raw materials and after passing through series of stages within the storage silos, ultimately results in noodles being manufactured.
To begin with, a truck drops the flour in the storage silos within which flour, water and oil are added in the mixer. This equipment mixes all these raw materials and forms a mixture. The mixture passes through the rollers to form dough sheets which then passed through the a specialised machine to form dough strips. After that, dough strips are shaped into noodles disc which are deep fried to cook them thorougly and are properly dried.
Followed by cooking and drying, these noodles are packaged into cups in which various vegetables and spices are added to make them flavourful. Subsequently, these cups are labelled and sealed and finally resulting in the production of instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the instant noodle manufacturing process. An appropriate overview is provided, stating that it is an eight-stage, man-made, and linear process starting with raw materials and resulting in packaged noodles. The key stages are reported in a logical sequence, from flour storage and mixing through to rollers, shaping, deep-frying, drying, and final cup packaging. However, some aspects tend to over-generalise or slightly misrepresent the exact diagram details, such as treating the addition of vegetables and spices and the cup packaging as separate steps or describing the truck as dropping flour directly into the silos rather than via a pipe. Despite these minor limitations, the main trends and stages are clearly presented, fulfilling the core requirements of this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The writing demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from start to finish. Information is appropriately divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing the sequential steps. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the process, with transition markers such as "To begin with", "After that", and "Subsequently" ensuring a coherent flow. While referencing and paragraphing are generally managed effectively, a slightly more flexible use of cohesive ties and smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the response further. Overall, the arrangement of information is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate vocabulary range is employed to describe the industrial process, showing some attempts at less common lexical items such as "specialised machine", "flavourful", and "man-made and linear process". However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation, such as writing "noodles disc" instead of "noodle discs", "thorougly" instead of "thoroughly", and awkward phrasing like "resulting in the production of instant noodles" following a previous verb structure. While these vocabulary and spelling slips do not impede overall communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. A greater precision in technical terms would strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at complex structures such as relative clauses and participial phrases. Good control is shown over basic grammar, but some grammatical errors persist. Examples include article errors ("it is eight stage", "through the a specialised machine"), preposition misuse ("in the storage silos"), and minor subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies (e.g., "which then passed through" instead of "which are then passed through"). These errors occur fairly regularly alongside error-free sentences, but they rarely impede communication, perfectly reflecting a solid competence in grammatical control.
