Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at only 112 words, which significantly restricts the level of detail provided. While the student attempts to present an overview of the process and lists several steps from the diagram, the information is only minimally developed. Key stages, such as the transition from dough sheets and strips to noodle discs, and the specifics of cooking, drying, and packaging, are described very mechanically and with insufficient clarity. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand the response well beyond the word limit by fully describing the sequence of events, ensuring all main features are reported accurately, and providing a clearer overall summary without relying on repetitive statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some attempt to organise the response chronologically using basic transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'Followed by', and 'Overall'. However, the overall progression lacks a clear, logical flow, and referencing is sometimes confusing or imprecise. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are underdeveloped and fail to structure the information effectively. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, leading to a disjointed reading experience. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally, group related steps into distinct, logical body paragraphs, and ensure smooth transitions between the different stages of the manufacturing process.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and limited to words directly lifted or slightly adapted from the prompt, such as 'storage silos', 'flour', and 'noddles'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'noddles' instead of 'noodles', 'invole' instead of 'involves', 'mixied' instead of 'mixed', and 'labeling' instead of 'labelling'. These errors reflect a limited control of word forms and spelling. To move to a higher band, the student needs to build a wider range of vocabulary related to processes, avoiding repetition by using synonyms (such as 'manufacture', 'produce', 'convey', or 'package'), and pay closer attention to accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are notable issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'The given diagram illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'the flour in stored' instead of 'is stored', and 'the make a soft dough' instead of 'they make'. Articles and prepositions are frequently missing or misused, as seen in 'in stored in he storage silos' and 'in five step'. Frequent grammatical errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must incorporate a better mix of simple and complex sentence forms while maintaining tighter control over basic grammar, verb forms, and prepositions.
