IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided figure illustrates the process of the manufacturing of instant noodles. It consists of eight steps namely storing, mixing, spreading, striping, discs forming, cooking, flavouring, and finally labeling.
In the first step, flour is stored in the storage silos. From these containers, flour is taken to the mixer. In the next step, flour is mixed with the water and oil to make its dough. Then this dough is spread over the rollers called dough sheets. After spreading the dough, it is striped. The fiifth step involves the formation of discs by using noodles strips.
Noodles discs are cooked in oil and then they are dried. Cooked noodles are filled into the cups. After filling the cups, diced vegetables and spices are added for the flavour. Final step involves the labeling. These cups of instant noodles are labeled and then these are sealed. These sealed cups of noodles are sent for the sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the eight main steps of the instant noodles manufacturing process, beginning with flour storage and ending with labeling and sealing. An overview is successfully provided in the introduction by listing the core stages. However, some parts of the process are underdeveloped or slightly inaccurate compared to the diagram. For instance, the text mentions that 'flour is mixed with the water and oil to make its dough' and then 'spread over the rollers called dough sheets', whereas the visual shows the dough being formed into sheets via rollers. Additionally, the description of adding vegetables and spices ('after filling the cups, diced vegetables and spices are added') misrepresents the concurrent visual arrangement where cups and seasonings meet simultaneously. To move to a higher band, the student should ensure all mechanical stages and their relationships are reported with greater precision and extended detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is sequenced chronologically, mirroring the linear flow of the manufacturing diagram from storage silos to final sale. Paragraphing is handled reasonably well, separating the introduction, the initial preparation stages, and the final packaging phase. Cohesive devices such as 'In the first step', 'In the next step', 'Then', and 'After spreading' are used to guide the reader smoothly through the process, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, successfully linking pronouns like 'this dough' back to the previously mentioned flour and water mixture. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the student could employ a wider variety of advanced cohesive devices and integrate clauses more fluidly rather than relying on consecutive simple and sequential connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common process-specific terminology such as 'storage silos', 'discs forming', and 'sealed'. However, there are notable word choice inaccuracies and spelling slips, such as 'striping' instead of 'stripping', 'fiifth' instead of 'fifth', and 'discs forming' instead of 'disc formation'. The range of vocabulary remains somewhat limited, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'stored', 'taken', 'mixed', and 'added'. While these lexical shortcomings do not seriously impede communication, they restrict the response from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise academic collocations and eliminating spelling errors would significantly strengthen the lexical quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive voice structures appropriately for a process description, such as 'flour is stored' and 'noodles discs are cooked in oil'. There is good control over basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation. However, some minor grammatical issues persist, such as article omission or awkward prepositional phrasing in sentences like 'Final step involves the labeling', which lacks a necessary determiner ('The final step'). Other minor awkward phrasings occur, but they rarely impede communication. The grammatical range is moderately varied, containing error-free sentences alongside minor slips. To reach a higher band, the student would need to display a wider variety of complex sentence structures with consistently higher error-free frequency.
