IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pictorial representation illustrates the manufacturing of instant noodles.

Overall, it can be seen that the process is been carried out in 8 different steps starting with storage of flour and ending with labelling and sealing.

To begin with, the stored flour in storage silos is being transferred to mixer. In mixer there is addition of water and oil with the flour then it is passed on roller by which dough sheets are prepared. After that, the sheets are stripped and named as dough strips.

In the fifth step the strips are added into the noodles discs which contains the cooking oil and drying process for the strios into discs. Then they are transformed into cups in which vegetable and spices are added. In the last steps cups are prepared and labelling and sealing is done after that they are ready to be sell in market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the overall process of manufacturing instant noodles, providing a general overview and outlining the main stages from flour storage to labelling and sealing. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum, containing 146 words. Furthermore, some parts of the process are under-developed or described with slight inaccuracies in sequence and detail, such as the transition where strips are added into noodles discs. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of full development and the failure to meet the minimum word count keep this criterion at the current level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview sentence, and a chronological progression of steps. Cohesive devices are utilized to guide the reader through the manufacturing process, such as "To begin with", "After that", and "In the last steps". Paragraphing and referencing are generally functional, though transitions between some sentences feel slightly mechanical. The response fully satisfies the requirements of the lower band and exhibits some features of the next band through its logical sequence, but the mechanical nature of certain links prevents it from achieving a higher rating.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic steps of the process using terms like "pictorial representation", "storage silos", and "labelling and sealing". The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as saying "strios instead of strips" or awkward phrasing like "ready to be sell in market" instead of "ready to be sold on the market". These errors do not impede overall communication, but they reflect the characteristics of a limited yet functional lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are sometimes faulty. There are several grammatical errors regarding passive voice and verb forms, such as "the process is been carried out" instead of "is being carried out", and article omissions like "in mixer" instead of "in the mixer". Punctuation and prepositions also show occasional lapses. These errors occur with some frequency, but they rarely impede communication, aligning well with the descriptor for this level.
