IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided diagram illustrates the stages involved in the production of instant noodles in a factory.
Overall, the process comprises eight distinct steps, beginning with the initial raw material which is flour, stored in the large silos. Subsequently, the flour undergoes through several stages of production and cumulating in the final step of labeling and sealing.
At the initial stage, the stored flour is transferred into the mixture where it is mixed with the water and oil. Furthermore, After mixing the flour, the mixture passes through the giant rollers in order to make the dough sheets. In the fourth step, the large dough sheets are cut into the strips which are further converted into the noodles discs.
Once this step is completed, the noodles discs undergo through a further step of cooking in the oil. Moreover, the cooked noodles then passes through a drying process. In the next step, the vegetables and the spices are added into the cups of instant noodles. In the last step, the cups go through a process of sealing and labeling, completing the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all key parts of the task by outlining the main steps of the instant noodle manufacturing process, from raw flour storage to final labeling and sealing. The overview successfully identifies that the process comprises eight distinct steps and highlights the start and end points. However, some aspects of the process are slightly generalized or under-developed. For instance, the transition from dough sheets to strips and subsequently to noodle discs is mentioned, but the description of the cooking in oil and drying stages could have been linked more explicitly to the visual data. The progression is generally clear, satisfying the core requirements while showing glimpses of more detailed reporting that would be needed for a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence following the numbered stages of the diagram. Paragraphing is used adequately, separating the introduction and overview from the body of the process. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the steps, such as 'At the initial stage', 'Subsequently', and 'In the last step'. However, some cohesive links feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally slightly clunky, as seen in the phrase 'Once this step is completed, the noodles discs undergo through a further step'. Progression is maintained throughout, but smoother transitions and more varied cohesive phrasing would elevate the organizational quality further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used to describe a manufacturing process, including terms like 'manufactured', 'storage silos', 'raw material', and 'converting'. The student attempts less common vocabulary with varying success, showing an understanding of process-related terminology. However, there are some minor lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'cumulating' instead of culminating, and unnecessary prepositions as in 'undergo through'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, a wider variety of precise verbs and less common collocations should be utilized with greater accuracy and natural control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and passive constructions appropriate for a process description. There are some control and accuracy issues with grammar, such as redundant prepositions ('undergoes through several stages', 'undergo through a further step') and tense or word form issues like 'mixture' where 'mixer' was intended ('transferred into the mixture'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors do occur, they rarely impede communication. The presence of these recurrent minor structural inaccuracies places the grammar firmly at this level, where error-free complex sentences are not yet consistent enough to secure higher bands.
