Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response achieves a partial overview of the manufacturing process, mentioning the beginning and ending points, but remains underdeveloped in detailing several intermediary steps. While the student attempts to report the main stages, the description is somewhat mechanical and falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 137 words. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure all key features from the diagram are more fully described and extended, and meet the word count requirement to avoid penalization.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible progression from the storage silos to the final sealing stage. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different parts of the process, and basic cohesive devices such as "Looking first at" and "After that" are employed. However, cohesion is occasionally faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, such as the dangling pronouns in phrases like "during which passes from rollers". Improving logical transitions and ensuring clearer referencing between steps would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like "storage silos", "flour", and "vegetables and spices". However, there is a limited range of vocabulary, and noticeable errors in word choice and word formation occur throughout, such as "mixure", "shhets", and "lapel" instead of "label". These errors indicate a restricted lexical range and spelling control. To improve, the student should expand their working vocabulary for describing industrial processes and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some faulty attempts at complex ones. There are frequent grammatical errors involving verb forms, prepositions, and voice, such as "process consist on" instead of "consists of", "Flour mix with oil and water and then sent it", and "nodds discs". These persistent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex structures and improving basic grammatical control over tense and voice would significantly elevate this criterion.
