IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The flow diagram shows the process of manufacturing instant noodles at an industrial scale.
The complete procedure consist of 8 steps starting from the storage silos ending up at the final product ready to be sold. The ingrediants used are flour, water, oil, vegetables and spices.
Starting with the first step where the floor is delivered from the storage silos to the mixer, where oil and water is added to the flour and mixed, Which is then passed through the rollers that converts the dough into sheets. The dough sheets are then cut by a cutter into long strips that are then converted into round noodle discs.
The process is followed by cooking the noodle discs in oil and drying them up before the vegetable and spices are added and poured them into cups. Finally the cups are sealed and labelled from the labelling machines, which marks the end of the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the eight main steps of the instant noodle manufacturing process, from flour storage to the final labelled cups. An appropriate overview is provided at the beginning, identifying the starting and ending points and the primary ingredients used. However, some stages of the process are less fully developed than others; for instance, the transition from dough sheets through strips to discs is described somewhat generally rather than detailing the specific functions of the rollers and cutters clearly. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend and fully develop every step with more precise reporting of the diagram's features and a sharper comparison of the mechanical transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and provides a logical progression from the delivery of raw materials to the final sealing of the cups. The writer attempts to link the stages using cohesive devices and participial phrases such as "Starting with the first step" and "Which is then passed". However, cohesion occasionally becomes mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the dangling relative clause "Which is then passed" starting with a capital letter and lacking a clear antecedent noun. Paragraphing is also somewhat underdeveloped, as the body of the process is condensed into a single dense paragraph rather than being broken down into logical phases of production. Improving the variety of referencing and creating clearer paragraph breaks would enhance the overall flow and organization.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an acceptable range associated with industrial processes, such as "industrial scale", "storage silos", and "manufacturing process". The writer attempts to incorporate less common lexical items, but this is accompanied by some noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that do not impede communication. For example, "ingrediants" is misspelled, and "floor" is incorrectly used instead of "flour". Additionally, the collocation "poured them into cups" is awkward. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary must show greater precision, accurate spelling, and more natural collocations when describing technical operations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over multi-clause structures. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. For instance, subject-verb agreement is faulty in "The complete procedure consist of", and prepositions or articles are mishandled in phrases like "before the vegetable and spices are added". Run-on structures and comma splices also occur, such as connecting clauses with commas and relative pronouns without proper punctuation control. These errors represent the typical mix of accurate simple structures and occasionally faulty complex attempts expected at this level, where grammar slips occur but rarely impede overall communication.
