IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram shows the manufacturing process of instant noodles.

Overall, it consists of 8 steps. The process is divided into two sections, one of which deals with making the noodles and the other section involves packaging. It begins with the important raw materials and ends with the final product ready to be shipped. The entire process takes place in one continuos automated system.

Initially, flour stored in large storage silos is used as the main raw ingredient, which is mixed with water and oil in a mixer; the mixture is passed through rollers where the dough is flattened into sheets. Further processes include cutting the sheet into thin strips, followed by reprocessing them into discs. The noodle discs are then fried in cooking oil and dried over a counter.

On the other end of the process, the ready-to-go noodles are loaded into cups containing vegetables and spices. The cups are then sealed and labelled for shipping.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response gives a clear account of the process, with an overview identifying its two broad phases and its progression from raw materials to a finished product. It accurately reports the main sequence from mixing flour with water and oil through forming sheets, strips and discs, then cooking and drying before packaging. However, some details are imprecise or unsupported: the diagram shows the discs being cooked in oil and dried, but not “over a counter,” and it does not indicate that the system is automated or that the product is ready to be shipped. The packaging description also omits the distinct labelling-and-sealing stage and the addition of vegetables and spices to the cups. More precise reporting of these final stages would make the coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is organised clearly into an introduction and overview followed by two paragraphs tracing noodle production and packaging. Sequencing is easy to follow, supported by transitions such as “Initially,” “Further processes,” and “On the other end of the process.” The overview’s division into noodle-making and packaging also gives the reader a useful framework. To strengthen cohesion further, make the links between stages more exact: “Further processes” is broad, while “The noodle discs are then…” provides a clearer chronological connection. The final paragraph moves quickly from adding ingredients to sealing and labelling, so explicitly distinguishing these stages would improve the progression and ensure the description mirrors the diagram’s sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The response uses an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “raw ingredient,” “flattened,” “thin strips,” “reprocessing,” and “sealed.” These choices help describe the stages without excessive repetition, and the meaning remains clear. Some wording is less precise or natural for a process diagram: “ready-to-go noodles” is informal, “over a counter” does not accurately describe the cooking-and-drying stage, and “reprocessing them into discs” is vague about how the strips are shaped. “Continuos” is also misspelled. More exact technical verbs and nouns would show greater control and precision, particularly when describing the cooking, drying, and packaging stages.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

There is a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “Initially, flour stored in large storage silos is used as the main raw ingredient, which is mixed with water and oil…” and the passive constructions appropriate to describing a process. Most sentences are clear and grammatical, and the sequence of actions is generally expressed accurately. A few issues remain: “one of which deals with making the noodles and the other section involves packaging” is not fully parallel in structure, and “The entire process takes place in one continuos automated system” contains a spelling error rather than a grammatical one. The long opening sentence in the production paragraph could also be divided or carefully punctuated to make its stages easier to process. Overall, grammar is well controlled, with some room to refine complex sentence construction.
