IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles. It shows the detailed factory process of making instant noodle.
Overall, The diagram shows a full factory process of making noodles, from flour to instant cup noodles in total 8 steps.
The truck is a flour container that is sending flour from truck t storage silos. The storage silos are flour container that stores flour for further processing. The first step is to mix water, oil and flour using mixer. The mixer mixes these three ingridient and pass them to rollers which then makes a proper dough sheets. It is then passed to connected dough strips machine which makes a strip of dough sheet giving it a straight noodle like structure. The straight raw noodles now is sent to another machine which makes them round, a perfect noodle discs.
Now, the cooking journey begins here. The noodles discs are now sent to cooking machine where they get cooked and dried. The noodles are ready but not for sales. Then they are sent to a machine again for packaging. They are now kept inside a cup with vegetables and spices. The final part is labeling where the packaged noodles with vegetables and spices are now sent to labelling and sealing machine and our cup noodles are now ready.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages in the correct general order, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging. The overview identifies the process as a complete factory sequence, but “in total 8 steps” is not fully clear because the diagram also shows intermediate stages such as rollers and the formation of dough sheets, strips, and discs. Some details are reported less fully or imprecisely: the truck transports flour to the silos, rather than being a flour container, and the diagram shows noodles entering cups as vegetables and spices are added, not a separate packaging machine. To strengthen the response, describe the key transitions more precisely and make the overview capture the linear process from raw flour to sealed cups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by the preparation stages and then cooking and packaging. Paragraphing helps distinguish these parts, and sequencing phrases such as “The first step,” “Now,” and “The final part” guide the reader through the process. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective progression. However, several links are repetitive or conversational, particularly the repeated “now” and “again,” while “The cooking journey begins here” interrupts the otherwise factual process description. Some references, such as “They are now kept inside a cup,” could be more explicit about the noodles. Use concise stage links and clearer references to maintain a more consistently formal, smoothly connected account.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “noodle discs,” and “labelling and sealing,” so the reader can follow the manufacturing stages. There is also some attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “further processing” and “straight noodle like structure.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “machine,” “makes,” and “now,” and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: the truck is described as a “flour container,” and “ready but not for sales” does not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “ingridient” and inconsistent spelling of “labelling” also reduce control. Build a more precise set of process verbs and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including relative clauses such as “which then makes a proper dough sheets” and a sequence linked with “where.” The stages are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The mixer mixes these three ingridient and pass them” has problems with plural agreement and verb form, while “The noodles discs are now sent to cooking machine” is missing an article. The overview also has an unnecessary capital in “Overall, The diagram,” and several sentences use awkward or incomplete constructions, such as “The truck is a flour container that is sending flour from truck t storage silos.” Aim for accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and past participles, while retaining a mix of sentence structures.
