IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process by which instant noodles is manufactured.

Overall, the procedure comprises if eight principle stages, commencing with flour taken into storage silos and culminating in labelling and sealing. Broadly speaking, the process involves a sequential series of industrial stages, ultimately resulting in final product.

Initially, the flour is moved into mixer from storage silos and there it is mixed with water and oil. This is followed by the product being placed in the roller during which it compresses it into dough sheets. Subsequently, the dough sheets are cut into strips, after which it is rolled as noodle discs, aferwards it is fried in cooking oil followed by drying.

In the subsequent stages, the noodles are transferred into cups followed by filling with vegetable and spices. Finally, the product is sealed and labelling takes place, thereby culminating in the production of instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as a sequence and give an overview, noting that it begins with flour entering storage silos and ends with labelling and sealing. Most of the main stages are included, including mixing, forming sheets and strips, cooking, drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the flour moves from the silos to the mixer, rather than being described simply as moved “into mixer,” and the cups are filled with noodles before vegetables and spices are added. The overview also calls the process “eight principle stages” without clearly distinguishing the numbered stages from the intervening roller operations. The response is four words below the required minimum, so it needs a little more relevant detail to meet the task fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs that move through the early and later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the progression is generally logical. This already provides a coherent structure, but some linking is mechanical or imprecise. For example, “This is followed by” and “after which” repeatedly connect stages without always making the relationship clear, while “In the subsequent stages” is a broad transition. The sentence about cups and filling also compresses two actions, making their order less clear. Use more precise links and give each stage a clear subject to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “cooking oil,” and “culminating,” which helps describe the manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “comprises” and “sequential series.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “the product being placed in the roller” is vague, “rolled as noodle discs” does not clearly describe how the discs are formed, and “filling with vegetable and spices” is not a natural description of the ingredients being added. “Principle stages” is also the wrong word form in this context. Choose precise process verbs such as “passes through,” “is shaped into,” and “is topped with,” and check spelling, including “afterwards.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including passive constructions and clauses linked with “after which” and “during which.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. The opening has a subject–verb agreement error in “instant noodles is manufactured,” and “comprises if eight” is an incorrect construction. Articles and plurals are also problematic in “moved into mixer” and “the roller,” while “it compresses it” has an unclear pronoun reference. The final sentence, “the product is sealed and labelling takes place,” combines passive and active forms awkwardly. Use consistent passive structures for the stages and check agreement, articles, and pronoun references; these changes would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
