IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process illustrates the process of manufeacturing instant noodles.

Overall, the process is divided into eight different steps. Once the raw material is dumped into the mixer, all the remaining steps are started step by step automatically through a machine. The rolllers or moving parts of it help to transfer raw or half finished material to the next step till the dispatchment of labelled and sealed finished product.

At first, the flour, stored in the storage soils, transmitted to the mixer where flour is mixed with water and oil. Moving to the next steps by rollers, this dough is first converted in the form of sheets. These sheets are then cut in a way to create long strips of dough. After that, multiple discs are created through the strips before the cooking and drying of the discs. These cooked discs are now ready for pakaging. For pakaging first these discs are staked into cups which are then labelled and sealed. After this stage, the instant noodles with their branding and pakaging are dispatched.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour entering the mixer to the noodles being cooked, placed in cups, labelled and sealed. The overview also recognises the use of machinery and rollers. However, some important details are incomplete or inaccurate: the diagram shows flour moving from storage silos to the mixer, but does not say the later stages operate automatically or that the finished cups are dispatched. The addition of vegetables and spices is omitted, and “multiple discs are created through the strips” does not clearly explain that the strips are formed into noodle discs. To strengthen the report, describe each stage precisely and keep the overview focused on the main transformation and final packaging.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing phrases such as “At first,” “Moving to the next steps,” and “After that” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from mixing to packaging is generally easy to understand. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “Moving to the next steps by rollers” does not clearly show which material is being moved, while “For pakaging first” repeats the same idea awkwardly. The overview also introduces “dispatchment,” which is not shown in the diagram. Use more precise links between stages and ensure each paragraph contributes directly to the process description.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “rollers,” “sheets,” “strips,” “cooking,” and “labelled and sealed,” so the reader can understand the general production sequence. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “raw material” and “half finished material.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “manufeacturing,” “soils” for “silos,” “pakaging,” and “staked.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “discs are created through the strips” and “dispatchment of labelled and sealed finished product.” Use accurate process terms and check spelling carefully; describing the noodles as being formed into discs and the cups as the final product would be clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including a relative clause in “the mixer where flour is mixed with water and oil” and a sequence of passive forms such as “are then labelled and sealed.” These choices suit a process description, and the main stages remain understandable. However, some sentence structures and grammatical forms are inaccurate or awkward. “The flour … transmitted to the mixer” lacks a correctly formed passive verb, and “all the remaining steps are started step by step” is an awkward construction. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “the dispatchment of labelled and sealed finished product.” Aim for consistently formed passive clauses, for example, “The flour is transferred to the mixer,” and check articles and singular/plural forms.
