IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of noodles.

Overall, it is evident, that it consists on eight steps. This starts with storage silos, ends with labelling and, sealing of manufactured product.

Moving to details, flour is tranported by van and moved it on Rollers. Before going to rollers, water and oil are mixed to the flour to enhanced the consistency of flour. Moreover, from the rollers, it is shifted to dough sheets and converted it to dough strips which is a significant step. At the fifth step, the strips changed into noodles discs. However, cooking oil is added in the discs and dried it. Further, it is transferred into the cups and added vegetables and spices with them to increased the taste of noodles. Labelling and sealing are the final steps of the nodels preparation. Outside the cups a lebel of specific name is pasted and sealed it. After packing noodles are ready to dispatched in market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as a sequence and provide an overview, noting that it begins with storage silos and ends with labelling and sealing. You also cover several key stages, including mixing, shaping, cooking, adding ingredients and packaging. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the flour arrives by truck, not van, and it is conveyed to the silos rather than directly to rollers. Water and oil are added in the mixer, while the rollers shape the dough. The overview also says there are eight steps without clearly distinguishing the numbered stages from the intervening shaping stages. To strengthen the response, describe the sequence more precisely and ensure the overview captures the main transformation from flour to packaged cups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a brief overview and a paragraph describing the stages in sequence. Time and sequence markers such as “Before,” “Moreover,” “At the fifth step” and “Further” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from preparation to packaging is generally logical. This meets the criterion well, though some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately; for example, “from the rollers, it is shifted to dough sheets” makes the sequence difficult to picture. The overview’s “starts with… ends with…” is useful, but the final sentences repeat the labelling and sealing stage. Use more precise transitions and group related stages to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” “vegetables and spices,” and “labelling and sealing.” This gives the response an adequate range for describing the diagram. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “transported by van,” “moved it on Rollers,” “enhanced the consistency,” and “ready to dispatched in market.” There are also spelling errors, including “tranported,” “nodels” and “lebel,” which reduce precision. Aim for standard process verbs and natural combinations, such as “is conveyed,” “is shaped into,” and “is packaged for distribution.” Check spelling and avoid adding purposes, such as improving taste, unless the diagram supports them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a passive construction in “water and oil are mixed” and a sequence of clauses describing the stages. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “it consists on eight steps” needs a different preposition and structure, while “to enhanced” and “to increased” use the wrong verb form after “to.” In “the strips changed into noodles discs,” the tense and passive form are not controlled, and “which is a significant step” has an unclear reference. Some sentences also combine several actions without clear grammatical links. Practise consistent present-simple passive forms for process descriptions and check agreement and infinitive forms.
