IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This diagram below illustrates the process of making instant noodles that how these are manufactured by several stages.
Overall, the process has 8 stages starting from sourcing the flour and stored in sillos. Variety of machinery used to make dough and their sheets. Then adding oil in noodles discs and packaged in cups.
Starting from first stage the flour is stored in storage silos then the flour is going in mixer with adding some water and oil in it. The machine is use to make dough sheets then it convert into the strips.
The next step is to make noodle discs and dip into oil then drying it. The workers then start adding some flavours, vegetables and spices. The next and last step is to pack them into cups and put labeling and sealing in that cups. The instant noodles are ready to dispatch and soon available into some superstores. These 8 steps are taken to make tasty instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and give a useful overview of its broad stages, from flour storage through mixing and shaping to cooking and cup packaging. Most of the main steps are included, and the account is generally relevant. However, some details are less fully or accurately reported: the diagram shows noodles being cooked in oil and then dried, rather than simply “dip into oil,” and it does not show workers adding ingredients. The overview also says oil is added to the noodle discs, although water and oil enter the mixer. The final claim about dispatch and availability in superstores is not shown. To strengthen the response, report the diagram’s stages precisely and use the overview to summarise the transformation and packaging without adding unsupported information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the earlier and later stages. Sequencing phrases such as “Starting from first stage,” “The next step,” and “The next and last step” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent progression. However, some links are mechanical, and the overview’s short fragments (“Variety of machinery used…”) interrupt the flow. References such as “it” in “then it convert into the strips” are not always clear, while the final sentences repeat that the process has eight steps and add an abrupt comment about superstores. Use complete, connected sentences and clearer references to each product or machine to make cohesion more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “noodle discs,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms show an adequate range for describing the diagram, and the reader can generally understand the stages. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “sourcing the flour and stored” does not clearly describe the first stage, “dip into oil” is not the most accurate process wording, and “available into some superstores” is an awkward, unsupported phrase. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “sillos” and “labeling” (the diagram uses British spelling, “labelling”). Aim for precise process verbs and natural collocations, rather than adding evaluative wording such as “tasty.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is usually understandable. However, some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. The opening phrase “illustrates the process … that how these are manufactured” combines incompatible structures; write “illustrates how instant noodles are manufactured.” There are also errors in verb forms and agreement, such as “The machine is use” and “it convert,” and the overview fragment “Variety of machinery used” needs a subject and verb. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “put labeling and sealing in that cups.” Practise forming complete passive sentences for process descriptions, for example, “The dough is rolled into sheets and then cut into strips.” This would improve accuracy while retaining varied structures.
