IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This diagram depicts how instant noodles are manufactured. There are eight stages in the diagram from storing the flour tothe final stage of packaging and labelling.

In the beginning step, the lorry delivers flour to the mill and the flour is stored in silos. Basically silos are the containers for storing flour. After storage, the same flour are put into the mixer with water and oil. By following this step, the dough is rolled into the sheets by using rollers. The soft and flufy dough is transfered to noodle discs to give it the proper shape.

Furthermore, the well-shaped noodles are semi-cooked or dried while passing through the discs. After that, the dried or semi-cookes noodles are put into the different sized of cups with adding vegetables and spices. Once the all process is completed the noodles cups are sealed and stamp a labels on the top of the cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as manufacturing instant noodles and give a basic sequence from flour storage to packaging. However, the account only partially covers the diagram and several stages are misreported or unclear. For example, the dough sheets are not described as being cut into strips and then formed into noodle discs; instead, you say the dough is “transfered to noodle discs.” The diagram shows the discs being cooked in oil and dried, whereas “semi-cooked or dried” is uncertain and omits the oil-cooking detail. You also do not clearly report the final labelling and sealing stage. Add a concise overview of the full process and describe each transformation accurately, including the rollers, strips, cooking, drying, and cup packaging.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear chronological arrangement, moving from flour delivery through mixing and shaping to cup packaging. Paragraphing separates the opening from the process details, and transitions such as “After storage,” “Furthermore,” and “After that” help signal sequence. This gives the account a coherent overall structure. However, some links are mechanical or imprecise: “By following this step” does not clearly identify the action being continued, and “Furthermore” suggests an additional point rather than the next stage. The second paragraph also compresses several stages into long sentences, making the progression harder to follow. Use stage-focused transitions such as “The dough is then cut into strips” and give each major transformation a clear place in the sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough,” and “sealed,” so the topic is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “well-shaped noodles.” However, word choice and spelling are noticeably inaccurate in places: “mill” is not the storage stage shown, “flufy” and “transfered” are misspelled, and “different sized of cups” is an awkward phrase. “Stamp a labels” also does not describe the diagram naturally. These choices sometimes make the process less precise. Build a reliable set of manufacturing verbs and collocations, such as “pass through rollers,” “cut into strips,” “cook in oil,” and “seal and label the cups,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the time clause “Once the all process is completed” and the passive construction “are sealed.” The sequence is usually understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “the same flour are put” should use a singular verb, while “Once the all process” has an incorrect article pattern. The final clause, “the noodles cups are sealed and stamp a labels,” shifts verb form and does not maintain a clear passive structure. Some sentences also combine several actions without clear grammatical links. Practise consistent passive forms for process descriptions—for example, “The noodles are cooked, dried, placed in cups, and then sealed”—and check subject–verb agreement and articles.
