IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the steps involved in the production of instant noodles, tracing the process from flour storage to the final packaging stage.
Overall, the procedure follows a linear, multi-stage sequence that begins with flour being taken from storage to mixing with water and oil, and ends with cups being sealed and labelled after being filled with noodles. During these stages, the noodles are shaped, cooked in oil, dried, and combined with flavouring ingredient before packaging.
In the intial stages, the ingredients are combined and formed into noodle portions. flour is taken out from storage silos and transferred to a mixer, where water and oil are added. Once the mixture have been blended, the mixture passes through a set of rotating rollers, which flattens it into sheets that are then cut into strips before being shaped into round discs.
The remaining stages deal with heat treatment and final assembly. The noodle disc are cooked in oil and subsequently dried as thewy move along the production line. After this stage has been completed, the dried noodles are placed into individual cups, and vegetables and spices are added before filled cups are sealed and labelled, completing the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear account of the process from flour storage through to the finished cups, and its overview identifies the linear sequence and the main transformations: mixing, shaping, cooking, drying and packaging. The details about water and oil entering the mixer, rollers forming sheets, and strips becoming discs are grounded in the diagram. The final stages are also broadly covered, including the addition of vegetables and spices and the sealing and labelling. To make the account more precise, distinguish the order of the final operations: the diagram shows noodles entering cups as vegetables and spices are added, followed by labelling and sealing. The statement that cups are sealed and labelled after being filled is accurate, but the overview could capture this sequence more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two chronological detail paragraphs. The progression from “In the initial stages” to “The remaining stages” helps the reader follow the process, while links such as “Once,” “before,” and “After this stage” make the sequence easy to understand. Paragraphing is appropriate and the account does not wander from the task. Some connections could be made more precise: “before being filled cups are sealed and labelled” is awkwardly structured and makes the relationship between filling and sealing less clear. There is also a small spacing issue in “shaped, cooked in oil, dried.” More controlled punctuation and clearer sequencing of the final assembly would make the cohesion smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing a manufacturing process, with useful terms such as “production,” “transferred,” “blended,” “flattened,” “heat treatment,” and “final assembly.” These choices help convey the stages without relying entirely on basic verbs. However, some word-choice and spelling slips reduce precision: “flavouring ingredient” is not the most natural description of vegetables and spices, and “intial” and “thewy” are misspelled. “Noodle portions” is also less exact than the diagram’s “noodle discs.” Aim for consistent, accurate process terminology and check spelling carefully; this would make the otherwise clear vocabulary more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “where water and oil are added” and time clauses such as “Once the mixture…” and “After this stage…”. Most sentences communicate the process clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “the mixture have been blended” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “The noodle disc are cooked” has a singular/plural mismatch. In “before filled cups are sealed,” the participle construction is incomplete; use “before the filled cups are sealed” or “before the cups are filled, sealed and labelled,” depending on the intended sequence. Review agreement, articles and participle clauses, and proofread punctuation around lists to improve accuracy.
