IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The flow-chart demonstrates the process of manufacturing of instant noodles. The product does not come with the magic infact it take a lot of time and have a long procedure in manufacturing.Similarly the process of instant noodles begins from the storage of silos and finish with the labeling and sealing.

Overall the process is longer and time taking,it starts from the storage of silos and then these silos moves to the mixer machine. In mixer machine the oil and water has been added in the silos then these silos moves through the roller to make dough sheets then these dough sheets tranforms to the dough strips.

After making of dough strips, these dough strips moves to the noodles disc where the final shape of noodles has been placed. After that, cooking oil has been added to the noodles and the process of drying is done from the dryier machine.Subsequently, these noodles added to the cups where the vegetables and spices has been added into it and after that they just need the labeling and sealing before dispatching to the market so at last the process of labelling and sealing has been done and then they are for dispatching to the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as a sequence, give an opening and an overall statement, and report several central stages: mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, shaping the noodles, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices before packaging. This covers the main process, although some details are less fully or accurately described. For example, the silos do not move to the mixer; flour is transferred from them, and the noodles are placed into cups as vegetables and spices are added. The diagram shows labelling and sealing as the final production stage, but it does not show dispatch to a market. To strengthen the summary, describe the inputs and transformations precisely and avoid adding steps that are not shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the manufacturing sequence from storage through packaging, and the paragraph break gives the account a basic structure. Connectors such as “Overall,” “After that,” and “Subsequently” help signal progression. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “these silos” and “these dough sheets,” and several stages are joined into long sentences that make relationships less clear. The opening also repeats the idea that the process starts at the silos and ends with labelling and sealing. Use clearer paragraphing—for example, an overview followed by two stage groups—and vary references with precise nouns such as “the flour mixture” or “the strips.” This would make the progression easier to follow without relying on repeated connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles disc,” “vegetables and spices,” and “labelling and sealing.” This gives the reader a workable account of the diagram. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “manufacturing of instant noodles,” “the product does not come with the magic,” “time taking,” and “dryier machine.” Repeated use of “moves” also reduces precision, particularly when describing flour or noodles being transferred. Choose standard process verbs and collocations, and check spelling and word forms. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish ingredients being added, dough being shaped, and noodles being packaged.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms occur across the response. For instance, “it take a lot of time” needs subject–verb agreement, while “these silos moves” has a plural subject with a singular verb and also misrepresents the action. In “the oil and water has been added,” the compound subject requires a plural verb; “the vegetables and spices has been added” has the same agreement problem. Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops, and long clauses joined by “then” or “after that” are difficult to control. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and divide stages into shorter, correctly punctuated sentences.
