IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram demonstrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Overall, there are eight stages in the process, beginning with flour stored in silos and culminating in the final product being labelled and sealed in cups.

In the first stage, flour is stored in storage silos and then transported by a truck to the factory. Next, water and oil added to the flour in a mixer. This mixer is then passed through rollers to create dough sheets, which are subsequently formed into dough strips. These strips are then shaped into noodle discs.

Following this, the noodles discs are cooked in oil and dried. In the next stage, the dried noodles are placed into cups, where vegetables and spices added to them. The final stage involves labelling and sealing the cups, after which the instant noodles are ready to distribute.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear overview of the process, identifying its start with flour in silos and its finish with labelled and sealed cups, and you report the main production stages in the correct general order. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the truck delivers flour to the silos, rather than transporting it from them to the factory, and the noodles are cooked in oil and dried before vegetables and spices are added to the cups. The description also omits the addition of water and oil as inputs to the mixer and does not clearly explain that the noodles enter cups. The response is 13 words below the required minimum, which limits the opportunity to develop the stages fully. Adding these details would make the account more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is organised in a clear sequence, with an introduction, an overview and a chronological description of the stages. Transitions such as “In the first stage,” “Next,” “Following this” and “The final stage” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from mixing to packaging is generally easy to understand. Cohesion is effective overall, though the repeated use of “then” and “next” makes some links feel formulaic. There is also a missing space after the full stop in “them. The final stage,” which interrupts the presentation slightly. To make the progression more flexible, vary the linking language and use clearer references when describing how the noodles move into cups and are packaged.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms make the stages recognisable, and “culminating in” is an effective choice for the overview. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive, however. “The mixer is then passed through rollers” suggests that the mixer itself moves through the rollers, rather than the dough, while “noodles discs” is an awkward form. “Ready to distribute” is also less natural here than a phrase describing the finished product being sent out. More precise process collocations and varied verbs would improve flexibility and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the relative clause in “dough sheets, which are subsequently formed into dough strips” and the participle phrase “beginning with flour stored in silos.” Most sentences communicate the sequence clearly. Some grammatical errors remain: “water and oil added” and “vegetables and spices added” are missing the passive verb “are,” and “the noodles discs” has an incorrect article and plural construction. In “This mixer is then passed through rollers,” the sentence structure also assigns the action to the wrong subject, making the process unclear. Check passive forms consistently, since they are especially useful for describing manufacturing, and proofread articles and plural nouns.
