IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The information about that how immediate noodles are prepared in the industry, is illustrates by the process chart.
Overall, it is clear that it is in 7 steps, man-made process. It begins with the storage of floor in silos, and finally results into the formation of cup noodles.
First of all, the floor needed for the noodles manufatured are stored in the pair of storage silos. In the second step, a mixer is formed after addition oil and water into the flour. Ather that, with the assistance of rollar dough sheets are formed. Moreover, then the dough is cut into horizontal strips.
Probing ahead towards the remaining information, Dough strips are shaped into the large amount of noodles dics. Noddles are cooked with oil and dired. Furthermore, vegetables and spices are added into the dried noodles before packed into the cups with labeling and sealing that applied outside to the cup and sent to different shops and markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as beginning with flour storage and ending with cup noodles, and you report several central stages: mixing, forming sheets and strips, shaping noodle discs, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. This gives the reader a generally accurate account of the production sequence. However, the overview says there are “7 steps,” whereas the diagram presents more stages, and some details are incomplete or unclear. In particular, the final stages should explain that the noodles enter cups, which are then labelled and sealed; the response instead suggests the noodles are packed into cups “with labeling and sealing.” A more precise overview and fuller description of the packaging stage would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs describing the earlier and later stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “First of all,” “In the second step,” and “Furthermore” help signal progression. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some linking phrases are awkward or do not clearly express the relationship between stages, particularly “Probing ahead towards the remaining information.” The repeated use of “Moreover” and “Furthermore” also feels somewhat mechanical. Improve cohesion by using simpler, more precise sequencing language and by linking each stage directly to the next, especially around the transition from cooking and drying to cup filling and sealing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “cooked,” and “dried,” so the reader can recognise the main production stages. However, the range and accuracy of word choice are limited, with noticeable spelling and form errors that sometimes make the description harder to understand. Examples include “floor” for flour, “manufatured,” “rollar,” “Noddles,” and “dics.” Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “a mixer is formed” and “a large amount of noodles dics.” Use the diagram’s precise labels and practise common process collocations, such as “flour is mixed,” “the dough is rolled into sheets,” and “the noodles are shaped into discs.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the response uses passive constructions appropriate to a manufacturing process, for example, “are stored” and “are added.” The stages are usually understandable despite some grammatical problems. However, errors occur in sentence structure, verb forms, articles, and agreement. For instance, “is illustrates by the process chart” has an incorrect verb construction, while “it is in 7 steps” is not a well-formed description. In “before packed into the cups,” the passive structure is incomplete; write “before they are packed into cups.” Aim for accurate, complete clauses and check subject–verb agreement and articles, while retaining a mix of sentence patterns.
