IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing quick noodles in factories.

Overall, the making of instant noodles is started from flour which is stored in storage silos. After various process the final step is labeling and sealing.

Firstly, the truck full of flour fills the storage silos for the next procedure. The storage silos are big enough to store flour in tons then the flour put into a mixer including water and oil. The rollers are used to forward mixer material to the next step and rollers are connected with dough sheets. On the step four there are dough sheets to separate materials.

In the fifth step, there are noodles discs right after dough strips. Noodles discs are used to make the shape of noodles. The next step is cooking oil and drying. After drying machine process the vegetables and spices put into noodle cups. Finally, at the last process is labeling and sealing in a automatic machine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as manufacturing instant noodles and give a basic overview, noting that it begins with flour in silos and ends with labelling and sealing. Several central stages are also mentioned, including mixing, rolling, cooking and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “On the step four there are dough sheets to separate materials” does not correctly explain that sheets are formed into strips, and the account does not clearly describe the noodles being shaped into discs before cooking. The claim that the silos store flour “in tons” is not shown in the diagram. To make the report more complete, describe each transformation precisely and explain that the finished cups emerge on a conveyor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the general order of the manufacturing process, using “Firstly,” “In the fifth step,” and “Finally” to guide the reader. The opening overview also helps establish the start and end points. However, the sequence is not consistently clear: the paragraph moves from dough sheets to an unclear description of step four, then jumps to noodles discs, leaving the transition from sheets to strips difficult to follow. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated references to numbered steps and “the next step.” The final sentence also introduces “at the last process” after “Finally,” which is redundant. Grouping the stages into preparation, shaping and cooking, then packaging would create clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary such as “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” and “labeling and sealing,” so the reader can recognise the topic and many stages. However, some word choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Quick noodles” is less appropriate than the task’s term “instant noodles,” while “forward mixer material” and “separate materials” do not clearly describe the actions shown. “The vegetables and spices put into noodle cups” also needs a more precise process expression. Use verbs that name each transformation, such as forming, cutting, shaping, cooking and adding, and avoid unsupported descriptions like “big enough” or “in tons.” This would make the account more accurate and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes both simple sentences and some attempts at longer structures, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in verb forms, articles and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “the flour put into a mixer” needs a passive verb (“is put”), and “After various process” requires a plural noun. The sentence “After drying machine process the vegetables and spices put into noodle cups” lacks a clear grammatical structure and a verb for the addition stage. Likewise, “Finally, at the last process is labeling and sealing” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Practise accurate passive constructions for process descriptions and check that each sentence has a clear subject and finite verb.
