IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates how instant noodles are prepared. This process consist on eight steps which includes flour, dough sheets and noodles discs.

Firstly, flour is put into the storage silos. In the second and third stage, flour is added into the mixer. The water and oil is also absorbed in the mixer for quick preparation and making flour ready for noodles. Then the rollers push the flour into dough sheets for further processing. In next steps, the flour is converted into dough strips and move further for converting into the noodles discs which is the final shape of it.

Further process is for packaging and flavouring as in next step the noodles discs are placed into the machine for drying with the help of cooking oil. After it the noodles put into the cups and in the next stage vegetables and spices are mixed into the noodles cups for flavour. Then in the last the process of labelling and sealing starts. The labels also put on the packages of noodles as a tag of company.

To conclude, the noodles manufacturing process requires a lot of effort and patience. Also the vegetables and spices makes the taste of it more favourable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage through shaping, cooking, and packaging. However, the account only partially reports the diagram: the overview is not clear, and the sequence is sometimes inaccurate. For example, vegetables and spices are added to the cups after the noodles enter them, not mixed into the noodles before they are placed in cups. The description also omits the separate stage in which dough strips are formed into noodle discs, and the final product emerging on a conveyor. Some details, such as the claim that the process requires “effort and patience,” are not shown in the diagram. A concise overview of the main production stages, followed by an accurate account of the order, would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure and generally moves from the early production stages to packaging, using markers such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “After it.” This gives the reader a broad sense of sequence. However, progression is not consistently clear: “In the second and third stage” groups stages imprecisely, and the account of cups, noodles, and flavouring is difficult to follow because the order is muddled. Some linking phrases are repetitive or awkward, while the concluding paragraph adds a general comment rather than summarising the process. Grouping the stages into preparation and shaping, then cooking and packaging, and using clear references to each product as it moves through the process would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labelling and sealing.” This gives the description a useful range of task-specific terms. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “absorbed in the mixer,” “the final shape of it,” and “the taste of it more favourable.” “Graph” is also not the most suitable term for a process diagram. Repeated use of “process,” “stage,” and “noodles” limits flexibility, and “effort and patience” is not appropriate for describing the visual information. Choose precise verbs such as “is mixed,” “is shaped,” and “is packaged,” and use “diagram” or “production process.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “This process consist,” “which includes,” and “The water and oil is,” where the verb forms do not agree with their subjects. In “the noodles put into the cups,” a passive verb is needed, such as “the noodles are placed into cups.” The sentence beginning “In the next steps” also shifts from “the flour” to “move” without a clear grammatical subject. Articles and prepositions are sometimes awkward, as in “In next steps.” Practise accurate passive forms, which are especially useful for process descriptions, and check subject–verb agreement in each sentence.
