IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided flow chart illustrates the process of instant noodles manufacturing.

Overall, the process consists of several distict phases, beginning from storage silos and culminating in labeling and sealing of the noodle packs. It is linear, man made process that requires series of steps.

The process commences with transporting of flour from specific storage silos whic uses to store flour for long term to rollers, than water and oil is added into the flour. Following this, the rollers helps to converts this mixture into dough sheets. Once this step is completed the dough sheets further process to form dough strips.

Next to it, noodles discs are attached the noodle strips are passed through these discs. After this, cooking oil is added in these noodles then the process of drying take place. Furthermore, they shifts to the specific cup and vegetable and spices introduce. Eventually, in the labelling and sealing phase the cups are labeled and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as a sequence and provide an overview that it begins with flour storage and ends with labelling and sealing. Most major stages are included, from mixing and forming dough to cooking, drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the flour is transported from the truck into the silos, then fed to the mixer, where water and oil are added; your account suggests the flour goes directly from the silos to the rollers before the liquids are added. The description of noodles discs is also confusing, and the final emergence of finished cups is omitted. The overview is relevant, but could summarise the full start-to-finish process more precisely and the less clear stages need fuller explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account using markers such as “Following this,” “Next,” and “Eventually.” This makes the general progression understandable. However, some links between stages are difficult to follow, particularly “noodles discs are attached the noodle strips are passed through these discs,” which does not clearly explain how strips become discs. “Next to it” also gives an unclear reference, and the overview repeats the endpoint without helping to clarify the sequence. To strengthen progression, describe each transformation in order and use explicit references to the material or product at each stage. The organisation is coherent overall, but cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “flow chart,” “phases,” “mixture,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms help communicate the manufacturing sequence, and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “noodles discs are attached,” “passed through these discs,” and “vegetable and spices introduce.” There are also spelling errors, including “distict” and “whic,” and inconsistent spelling of “labeling/labelling.” Aim for precise process verbs such as “are formed,” “are cooked,” and “are added,” and check spelling and word forms. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but these inaccuracies limit precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a passive construction in “the cups are labeled and sealed” and sequencing clauses such as “Once this step is completed.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the rollers helps to converts” has subject–verb agreement and verb-form problems, while “the process of drying take place” needs agreement. The sentence beginning “Next to it” joins two ideas without clear punctuation, and “It is linear, man made process” is missing an article. Use passive forms consistently for this process and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. The range is developing, but greater accuracy across these structures is needed.
