IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process to manufacture instant noodles. Overall, this process consist of 8 stages. Starting from storage silos where the flour is stored, all the way to labelling and sealing station. In this 8 stages only the first stage is storage, while other seven are mechanical processes.
The first step is to store the flour properly in silos. This flour is then mixed with water and oil in the mixer to form a dough. This dough is passed through rollers to form the dough sheets. These dough sheets is cut out into strips. These strips then converted into noodles discs.
After that, these noodles discs are cooked and dried to remove moisture. The cooked and dried noodles discs is placed into each cup. The vegetable and spices is added into individual cups. These cups are then sealed and labelled in last station of this process. These cups are then ready to be sold in the market as instant noodles

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and your opening gives a clear overall account of the process. The sequence is generally accurate, including the addition of water and oil and the final labelling and sealing. The overview’s distinction between storage and mechanical stages is relevant, although calling the process eight stages is not fully aligned with the diagram’s separate rollers and shaping steps, and the description could more clearly explain that the noodles are formed into cups before vegetables and spices are added. The final claim that the cups are ready for sale is plausible but not shown. More precise coverage of the diagram’s key transitions would make the account more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an overview followed by the preparation stages and then cooking and packaging. Connectors such as “The first step,” “then” and “After that” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent overall progression. However, some links are repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “These” and “then,” and the first paragraph’s sentence beginning “Starting from storage silos” is a fragment rather than a fully integrated overview. References such as “These cups” are understandable, but the transition from cooking and drying to cup filling could be made more explicit. Varying the linking language and using complete, smoothly connected sentences would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms make the stages recognisable and generally communicate the process clearly. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “process to manufacture” would be better expressed as “process of manufacturing,” while “cut out into strips” and “placed into each cup” do not describe the diagram as accurately as “cut into strips” and “portioned into cups.” Repetition of “dough” and “noodles discs” also limits flexibility. More precise process verbs and varied references to the product would improve the range and naturalness of the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the passive constructions “is then mixed” and “are then sealed and labelled,” which suit a process description. Meaning remains clear overall, but some errors in agreement, tense and sentence construction prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “this process consist” should be “this process consists,” and “These dough sheets is cut” should be “These dough sheets are cut.” The sentence “Starting from storage silos…” is a fragment, while “In this 8 stages” has an incorrect determiner and plural pattern. There are also agreement errors in “the cooked and dried noodles discs is placed” and “The vegetable and spices is added.” Check subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete main clause.
