IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The figure highlight the steps involved in formation of instant noodles.

Overall, the synthesis is multi-step procedure comprised on the integration of transportation, main manufacturing unit followed by labelling and sealing.

To begin with initial step, the flour (delivered by trucks) is fed into storage silos. After that, water and oil mixture is added flour and the dough is formed in mixer machine. The solid dough is then passed to rollers where it is converted into plenty of plain dough sheets subsequently, followed by the formation of long noddle strips. These strips are binded togather with the help of cooking oil for adhesion in designated discs and dried.

Furthermore, these noodles stacks are the delivered to packing sesction. Where these put into cups already containg seperate vegatables and spices sachets to add flavours. From here, the labels are put on cups and followed by their seal packing and delivering into markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour delivery and storage through mixing, shaping, cooking, and packaging. The overview also recognises the broad progression from manufacture to labelling and sealing. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows noodles being cooked in oil and dried, not strips being bound together with oil to form discs. It also shows vegetables and spices added to the cups, rather than separate sachets, and does not show delivery to markets. The final stages are less fully described than the early ones. To strengthen the response, report the diagram’s stages precisely and give a concise overview of the complete process without adding unsupported information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall sequence, supported by paragraphing and signposts such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore.” The reader can follow the process from the silos to the finished cups, and the overview is placed near the beginning. Some links between stages are less smooth, however. “From here” has an unclear reference, while “Where these put into cups” is an incomplete sentence that interrupts the progression. The description also moves quickly from noodle strips to cooking and drying, leaving the intermediate stages difficult to follow. Use complete sentences and make each stage connect explicitly to the next; for example, explain that the strips are shaped into discs before they are cooked and dried.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” and “labelling and sealing,” which helps convey the manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “synthesis” and “designated,” but these are not always natural or precise in context. Several spelling errors—“noddle,” “togather,” “sesction,” and “containg”—reduce accuracy, and phrases such as “binded together … for adhesion” misrepresent the process. Choose familiar, precise terms over ambitious but unsuitable ones, and check spelling carefully. More accurate verbs such as “formed,” “shaped,” and “dried” would describe the diagram more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “where it is converted” and sequencing clauses with “After that” and “From here.” The main stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “The figure highlight” has subject–verb disagreement, and “water and oil mixture is added flour” is missing a necessary preposition and article. “Where these put into cups” is a sentence fragment, while “these noodles stacks are the delivered” contains problems with number and verb construction. Work on agreement, articles, and complete sentence structure, especially when joining stages. More consistently accurate sentences would make your process description easier to follow.
