IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of making instant noodles.

Overall, there are eight steps in the process which starts with storing flour in silos and ends at sealing and labelling cans before sending them into the markets.

To begin with, the flour is brought by the trucks and is stored inside a storage silos. Water and oil added in the flour and placed inside a mixer to make a dough. Moreover, this dough passes from the rollers to make a dough sheets which lately went inside a dough strips cutting process.

Furthermore, the noodles discs are being prepared inside the machine from those strips. The discs are placed on convyers for cooking in oil then for drying them. The cooked discs are being placed inside the cups. Vegetables and spices are now added inside the cups with noodles before they went for sealing and labelling process where labels are placed on the cups. Finally, this cups are now ready to sell in the markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as a sequence and give a clear overall account of its beginning and end, while covering the main stages from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging. This meets the task well, and the overview shows awareness of the process as a whole. Some details are less fully or accurately reported: the cups are described as “cans,” and the account does not clearly explain that the dough is rolled into sheets, cut into strips, and formed into noodle discs. The order of adding vegetables and spices is broadly correct, but the final description of the product being sent to markets is not shown in the diagram. More precise reporting of the transformations and equipment would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that move through the process in a generally logical order. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages, and the progression from flour to packaged noodles is clear overall. Some links are mechanical or do not accurately express the relationship between stages: “Moreover” introduces the dough-sheet stage without adding a distinct point, while “which lately went inside a dough strips cutting process” makes the sequence difficult to follow. The final paragraph also combines several stages in long sentences. Use more precise transitions and divide the later stages into clearer units to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing process,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “cooking,” “drying,” and “sealing and labelling.” These terms make the general meaning understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: the diagram shows “cups,” not “cans”; “convyers” is misspelled; and “dough strips cutting process” does not naturally describe the dough being cut into strips. Repetition of “placed” and “inside” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise process verbs such as “is transferred,” “is rolled,” “is cut,” and “is packaged,” and check spelling and natural combinations. This would improve clarity while retaining the relevant vocabulary already present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the overall sequence remains understandable. There are some recurring errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Water and oil added in the flour” needs a passive verb and a more accurate grammatical pattern, while “a storage silos” has an article–number mismatch. The phrase “which lately went inside” shifts tense awkwardly, and “this cups are now ready” has incorrect demonstrative agreement. Passive constructions are especially useful for describing a process, so practise forms such as “water and oil are added” and “the discs are dried.” More consistent tense and agreement would make the description more controlled.
