IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Firstly, visual representations show that factories have storage silos for flour, which is stored before the mixing process begins; this process involves three ingredients: flour, water, and oil. Then the mixer provides us with dough; the dough is passed through rollers, producing thin sheets. Then the dough is cut into thin strips. The strips are then formed into circular discs.

Thereafter, the noodles are cooked in oil and subsequently dried. The cups are filled with vegetables and spices, and in the final stage, they are labelled and sealed before being packaged.

In contrast, the manufacture of instant noodles involves a series of stages from preparing to packaging spices

Overall, the process consists of several stages beginning with storing flour and mixing with water and oil, including forming dough sheets, cutting strips, making discs, cooking, drying the noodles and ending with noodles being placed in cups, labelled and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main stages accurately, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking and drying, to cup preparation and sealing. The final overview also gives the reader a useful summary of the process. However, some details are incomplete or unclear: the diagram shows vegetables and spices being added to the noodles in cups, but “The cups are filled with vegetables and spices” may suggest the ingredients go into the cups separately. The statement that the product is “packaged” is not shown, and “packaging spices” in the contrast sentence misrepresents the process. To strengthen the response, report the cup-filling and labelling stages precisely and remove unsupported details. The main features are covered, but not all are equally clear or fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the manufacturing sequence for most of its description, and paragraph breaks separate the opening, process details and summary. However, progression is weakened by repetitive sequencing words such as “Then” and “Thereafter,” and the sentence beginning “In contrast” introduces no genuine comparison. It also interrupts the process account and repeats the overview rather than adding a useful stage. The final overview is relevant, but its placement after this unrelated sentence makes the structure feel less controlled. Group the stages into a clear beginning, middle and end, use a wider range of linking methods, and avoid connectors that imply a relationship the diagram does not show.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixing process,” “thin sheets,” “strips,” “discs,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms help communicate the sequence, and the meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “visual representations” is unnecessary, “the mixer provides us with dough” is conversational, and “packaging spices” does not accurately describe the final stages. “In contrast” is also unsuitable because the diagram presents one process rather than contrasting processes. Aim for concise, precise process language and use collocations such as “the dough is formed into sheets” or “the noodles are placed in cups.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You show a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are grammatically controlled, including “The strips are then formed into circular discs” and “Thereafter, the noodles are cooked in oil and subsequently dried.” Passive constructions are appropriate for describing a process. Some sentence-level issues remain: “Overall, the process consists of several stages beginning with storing flour and mixing with water and oil” has an unclear relationship between the opening stages, while “from preparing to packaging spices” is an incomplete and awkwardly structured phrase. The semicolon in the first paragraph also joins closely related clauses but could be replaced with a full stop for clearer control. Continue using passive forms, while checking that long phrases have clear grammatical links.
