IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The process diagram illustrates how instant noodles are made in a wide range of steps.
Overall, the making invoves the storage of flour in silos to the labelling and sealing of cups.
In the first stage trucks and containers are used for storage of sailos with flour. Water and oil are then, added with flour in giant rollers following the formation of dough sheets. In further 2-3 stages ,sheets convert from strips to noodle disc shaped material.
Discs of noodles are cooked in oil and dried in before further stages.Vegetables and different spices are then added to cups for flavoring enhancement. At last step, cups are being labelled with company name and flavor. They are also sealed for durability. These noodles are then ready to be sold and bought by companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as beginning with flour storage and ending with cups being labelled and sealed, and you report several central stages, including mixing, shaping, cooking, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the account is incomplete: it does not clearly explain that flour is mixed with water and oil, then rolled into sheets, strips, and discs, or that the finished cups emerge on a conveyor. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported, such as saying trucks and containers are used for storage and that the noodles are sold to companies. The overview is also broad rather than summarising the main transformation. The response is 127 words, below the required 150, so it needs more relevant process detail to meet the task fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall order: an introduction and overview are followed by stages from storage through to packaging. Sequencing expressions such as “In the first stage,” “In further 2-3 stages,” and “At last step” help the reader follow the process. However, the paragraphing and spacing are inconsistent, and some links between stages are unclear. For example, “Water and oil are then, added with flour in giant rollers” combines mixing and rolling in a confusing way, while “Discs of noodles are cooked in oil and dried in before further stages” leaves the transition incomplete. Use one clear paragraph for the overview and another for the stages, with accurate connectors such as “next” and “after this.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “dough sheets,” “noodle disc,” “spices,” and “sealed,” which helps communicate the topic. There is also an attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “flavoring enhancement” and “durability.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing this diagram: “giant rollers” does not describe the mixing stage, “containers” is vague, and “sold and bought by companies” adds an unsupported idea. Spelling errors such as “invoves” and “sailos” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process terms and natural collocations, for example “the flour is mixed” and “the cups are sealed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview phrase “from the storage of flour in silos to the labelling and sealing of cups.” The sequence is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. Examples include “Water and oil are then, added” (incorrect punctuation), “Discs of noodles are cooked in oil and dried in before further stages” (an incomplete construction), and “At last step” (missing an article). The passive form “cups are being labelled” is also less suitable for a general process description than the present simple passive, “cups are labelled.” Check articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and proofread punctuation so that each stage is expressed in a complete, clear sentence.
