IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The process diagram gives several steps of how instant noodles are manufactured in a factory.
Overall, making instant noodles is an eight steps process starting with floor being transfering to storage silos and ending with the the labelling and sealing. Also the cooking oil is being used for making instant noodles before drying it.
According to the diagram, first the floor is tranported to storage silos with four wheelers vehicals, than it would be mixed in the rollers. After that it goes through from the Dough sheets and strips. Finally the noodles discs are used for making noodles.
The noodles are cooked in cooking oil before drying it, than these are transfered to cups after putting different vegetables and spices. Finally the labelling and sealing are applied to it before it can be sold.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include several relevant stages, including flour storage, cooking and drying, adding vegetables and spices, and final labelling and sealing. However, the account is incomplete and some details are inaccurate: the flour is transported by truck, not “four wheelers vehicals,” and the mixer combines flour with water and oil before the dough passes through rollers. The overview also says the process ends with labelling and sealing, but the finished cups then emerge on a conveyor. The response is 16 words below the required minimum, which limits the opportunity to report the stages fully. To strengthen the response, describe the full sequence accurately and include the addition of cups and labels.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “first,” “After that,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the general direction of the process. However, progression is sometimes unclear because several stages are compressed into phrases such as “it goes through from the Dough sheets and strips,” and “Finally the noodles discs are used for making noodles” does not explain what happens next. The overview also repeats information later rather than summarising the whole process. Use one clear stage per sentence, maintain a consistent reference to the product, and connect each stage explicitly to the next to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “Dough sheets,” “noodles discs,” “cooking oil,” and “labelling and sealing.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of the subject. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling or word-choice errors reduce precision, including “floor” for “flour,” “tranported,” “vehicals,” and “transfered.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “used for making noodles” and “the labelling and sealing are applied to it.” Aim for accurate process verbs and collocations, for example, “the dough is rolled into sheets,” “cut into strips,” and “the cups are labelled and sealed.” Proofreading technical labels and common process terms would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a few different sentence patterns, including a passive construction in “The noodles are cooked in cooking oil” and a sequence of clauses linked with “before.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur in several sentences. For example, “an eight steps process” has incorrect number agreement, while “floor being transfering” and “the the labelling” show problems with verb form and repetition. The sentence “it goes through from the Dough sheets and strips” is also grammatically awkward, making the relationship between stages unclear. Use consistent present simple passive forms for this process, such as “The flour is mixed with water and oil,” and check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would make the description easier to understand.
