IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

First of all, flour is carried to storage silos and then mixer. After that, it goes through dough sheets and move towards dough strips. Then it passes through noddle discs and then from cooking and labeling process.

The manufacturing of noodles consist of almost 8 steps. In the first step, the flour is collected by the trucks and goes though storage silos. After this, it goese through the mixer where water and oil are added in the mixture. This mixture is then pushed by rollers towards dough sheets and then to dough strips. Noodle discs are formed in this step then the process of drying and addition of cooking oil. After which, vegetables and spices are added in the cups. At the last step, there is labelling and the sealing of product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad sequence from flour storage through mixing and shaping to the final cup stage, and you mention water and oil, vegetables and spices, and labelling and sealing. However, the account is incomplete and sometimes inaccurate: it omits the rollers’ role in forming sheets and strips, and does not clearly report that the noodle discs are cooked in oil and then dried before being placed in cups. The opening sentence is repetitive rather than a clear overview, and the response does not fully summarise the main features of the process. The required minimum length is not met, which also limits the detail available. To improve, give a concise overview of the full process and describe each key transition accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The stages are presented in a broadly chronological order, and sequencing phrases such as “After that,” “After this,” and “At the last step” help the reader follow the process. However, the response has two openings that repeat the same information, and the first paragraph does not develop into a clear overall summary. Some links are imprecise: “After which” is left as a fragment, while “then” is used repeatedly. The relationship between cooking, drying, and adding the ingredients is also difficult to follow. Organise the response into a brief overview followed by a single, orderly description of the stages, using clear links between each step.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough strips,” and “labelling and sealing,” so the reader can recognise the main stages. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or imprecise. “Noddle discs” is misspelled, and “the process of drying and addition of cooking oil” does not clearly express that the noodles are cooked in oil and then dried. “Collected by the trucks” is also an awkward description of flour delivery. Aim for precise process verbs and accurate collocations, while checking spelling. This would make the description clearer without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses mostly simple sentences and attempts some longer structures, such as “After this, it goese through the mixer where water and oil are added.” However, errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the description awkward. For example, “The manufacturing of noodles consist” has subject–verb disagreement, and “it goese through” contains an incorrect verb form. In “it goes through dough sheets and move towards dough strips,” the verbs do not agree, while “After which, vegetables and spices are added” is an incomplete sentence. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete sentence construction, and vary sentence patterns while keeping each stage grammatically clear.
