IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram outlines the stages involved in the making of instant noodles.

Overall, the process completes in eight stages, starting with sending flour from storage silos to mixer and ending in the manufacturing of instant noodles in the labelling stage.

Firstly, the raw material such as flour is added into storage silos which are then transferred into mixer where oil and water is added. The rollers then converts this mixture into dough sheets which are further transformed into dough strips.

These strips are then passed through the special type of discs which provide shape. After that the noodles are dried at high temperature. Simaltaneouly, cooking oil is also added. In the next step, the noodles are collected into cups and various type of spices and vegetables are added and finally they are labelled and seal packed in the last stage and they are made ready for sale in the stores and supermarkets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear account of the process from flour storage through to packaging, and the opening overview identifies the start and end points. The main sequence is mostly represented, including mixing, forming dough, cooking and adding ingredients. However, some details are inaccurate or imprecise: the noodles are shaped into discs after passing through rollers, rather than through “the special type of discs,” and the diagram shows cooking in oil followed by drying, not drying at high temperature with oil added simultaneously. The final stage is labelling and sealing; readiness for sale in stores and supermarkets is not shown. To strengthen the report, describe the stages more precisely and ensure the overview captures the full production sequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two chronological body sections, so the reader can follow the process from beginning to end. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “After that,” and “In the next step” help signal progression, and the stages are generally grouped sensibly. Some linking is less controlled in the final sentence, where several actions are joined together with repeated “and,” making the ending feel crowded. The overview also says the process ends “in the labelling stage,” while the diagram’s final operation is labelling and sealing. For a more polished progression, use clearer sentence boundaries and refer consistently to each stage as it advances.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “raw material,” “transformed,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “labelled.” These choices make the manufacturing sequence understandable. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for this diagram: “special type of discs” does not clearly describe the rollers that shape the noodles, and “seal packed” is not an accurate collocation for the final stage. “Making” and “manufacturing” are also repeated where more precise process verbs could add variety. There are spelling and form slips, including “Simaltaneouly” and “various type.” Aim for accurate technical descriptions and natural collocations, while retaining the clear vocabulary you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “starting with … and ending …” and the sequence of passive constructions such as “are then passed” and “are added.” This gives the report an appropriate process-focused style, and the meaning remains clear. Some errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction persist. For example, “the rollers then converts” should use a plural verb, while “oil and water is added” requires plural agreement. In “added into storage silos which are then transferred into mixer,” the reference and article use are unclear. The final sentence also joins several clauses with repeated “and.” Check agreement and articles, and divide long sequences into controlled sentences.
