IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The illustration below displays the process in which instant noodles are manufactured.

Overall, it is a multi-step process consisting of eight distinct phases. The procedure starts with collecting silos in cabins and ends with labeling and sealing the product.

Initially, the row material is stored in a specific area. After that, this material is transfered to a mixer and a mixture of water and oil is added to it. After the substances have been mixed, they are moved through dough through rollers. This is followed by entering to another stage which is dough strips to separate it to many pieces. Once the shape of noodles has been made, they are enterd to noodles discs. The next step is cooking by oil and drying. In the next stage, vegetables and spices are added to the product. At the final stage, these cups which are filled with noodles are labelled and sealed and they are ready to be sealed to the customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as multi-stage and include several key steps, such as mixing flour with water and oil, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: the process begins with flour being stored in silos, not “collecting silos in cabins,” and it ends with finished cups emerging after labelling and sealing, rather than simply ending at that stage. Some stages are also unclear or misreported, particularly the transition from dough sheets to strips and then to noodle discs. To strengthen the response, describe the sequence precisely and give a clear overview of the start, end, and main transformation from flour to packaged cups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable overall order, moving from storage and mixing through cooking to packaging, and sequencing phrases such as “Initially,” “After that,” and “At the final stage” help guide the reader. This gives the account a coherent basic progression. However, the paragraphing is limited, and some links between stages are difficult to follow: “they are moved through dough through rollers” and “Once the shape of noodles has been made, they are enterd to noodles discs” do not clearly show what happens next. The final sentence also repeats the idea of sealing. Use a separate overview paragraph and a process paragraph, and make each transition explicitly connect one product form to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “rollers,” “cooking,” “drying,” “vegetables and spices,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms show an adequate basic range for describing the diagram. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate and make parts of the process hard to understand, such as “collecting silos in cabins,” “row material,” and “they are ready to be sealed to the customers.” There are also spelling errors in “transfered” and “enterd.” Aim for precise manufacturing collocations and avoid repeating general words such as “stage” and “product” when a specific noun is available. For example, name the dough sheets, strips, noodle discs, and finished cups accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a passive construction in “vegetables and spices are added” and a sequence introduced by “After that.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the relationships between stages unclear. For example, “this material is transfered to a mixer” has an incorrect verb form, while “After the substances have been mixed, they are moved through dough through rollers” has a faulty sentence structure. The phrase “these cups … are labelled and sealed and they are ready” also joins clauses awkwardly. Review passive forms and sentence boundaries, and check punctuation after introductory phrases; in “area. After that,” a space is needed after the full stop.
