IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The procedure of producing instant noodles has been illustrated by the pictorial diagram.
Overall, it can be seen that it is a lengthy man-made process comprising of various steps. It begins with storing flour and endsnwith labelling and sealing the products. The cooking and drying stages are the essential parts of manufacturing process.
To commence with, flour is stored in large storage silos before being trannsferred to mixer. Water and oil are then added to flour are mixed thoroughly. Furthermore, the dough passes through rollers to form dough sheets. These sheets are subsequently cut into strips, which are then shaped into noodle discs.
To add further, the noodle discs are cooked in oil and then dried. After drying, the discs are placed in individual cups, where vegetables and other spices are added into the cup. In the final stages, the cups are labelled and sealed, completing the manufacturing process of instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the main stages in the correct order, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, to cup preparation and sealing. The overview also identifies the process as man-made and gives its start and end points. This is a solid account of the diagram, but some details are less fully reported: the dough is formed into sheets by rollers, and the finished cups emerge on a conveyor, neither of which is clearly included. The overview’s claim that cooking and drying are the “essential parts” is not a meaningful comparison or a feature especially highlighted by the diagram. To strengthen the summary, focus the overview on the linear sequence and the transformation from flour to packaged cups, and include the final product’s emergence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that follow the manufacturing sequence. Sequencing expressions such as “To commence with,” “subsequently,” and “In the final stages” help the reader follow the process. The progression is generally logical, although some linking is mechanical, particularly “To add further,” and the overview’s reference to cooking and drying as essential interrupts the otherwise straightforward summary. There are also small presentation issues, including missing spaces after full stops and extra spaces within sentences, which make the flow less polished. Use simpler, precise transitions and ensure each paragraph develops one clear part of the process.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “stored,” “transferred,” “thoroughly,” “subsequently,” and “individual cups.” These choices help describe the stages without excessive repetition. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural: “pictorial diagram” is less suitable than “process diagram,” “essential parts” does not clearly express the intended overview, and “other spices” adds a detail not shown in the visual. Spelling slips such as “trannsferred” and the fused “endsnwith” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the noodles as being cooked in oil and dried, then placed in cups with vegetables and spices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions such as “are then added” and a relative clause in “which are then shaped into noodle discs.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. In “Water and oil are then added to flour are mixed thoroughly,” the clauses are joined incorrectly; write, for example, “Water and oil are added, and the mixture is mixed thoroughly.” The opening overview also has an awkward construction in “comprising of,” and “before being transferred to mixer” needs an article. Missing spaces after sentence-ending punctuation further affect accuracy. More careful clause construction and article use would improve control.
