IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagaram illustrates the manufacturing of instant noodles used in daily life.
Overall the process is accomplished in the major eight steps beginning with the storage of flour in silos and ending with the labelling and sealing of noodles cups. 1- The first step starts from the storing of silos. The flour is stored in large storage silos before being used in the next stage of manufacturing process. At the next stage, an equipment Mixer is used and water and oil is added in the flour. The resulting mixture is then passed through rollers to produce flat sheets of dough. These sheets are subsequently cut into strips, which are shaped noodles dics. In the next stage after noodles dics are formed these noodles dics are cooked in oil and then dried. - After that, the dried noodles are placed into cups .Vegetables and spices are added to the cups to enhance the flavour of the noodles . Finally, the cups are labelled and sealed, completing the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages in the correct order, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, to adding vegetables and spices and sealing the cups. The overview identifies the process as having eight steps and gives its beginning and end, which helps summarise the diagram. Most details are relevant, including the addition of water and oil and the use of rollers. However, some stages are less fully described: the account does not clearly explain that the dough strips are formed into noodle discs before cooking, and the final movement of the cups along a conveyor is omitted. The overview could also capture the process more precisely by distinguishing preparation of the noodles from their packaging. This is a generally complete account, though not all key features are equally clear or developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are presented in a broadly logical sequence, and transitions such as “At the next stage,” “subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The overall statement also gives the response a useful opening. However, the body is presented as one long paragraph, and the inserted “1-” and dash before “After that” interrupt the flow rather than clarify the sequence. Some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “next stage,” while the reference “these noodles dics” is unclear and makes the connection between shaping and cooking less smooth. Grouping the preparation stages into one paragraph and the cooking and packaging stages into another, with more varied and precise transitions, would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixture,” “rollers,” “flat sheets of dough,” “strips,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms allow the reader to understand most of the manufacturing sequence. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “storing of silos” does not describe the first stage accurately, “noodles dics” is misspelled and repeated, and “noodles cups” is an awkward noun combination. “Equipment Mixer” is also an unnatural way to name the machine. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling carefully; for example, use “noodle discs” consistently and describe the flour as being stored in silos. This would make the vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence structure, including passive forms suited to a process description, as in “The flour is stored” and “The cups are labelled and sealed,” as well as a relative clause in “which are shaped.” Most of the sequence remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are noticeable, however: “water and oil is added” has subject–verb disagreement, and “an equipment Mixer is used” has an incorrect article and construction. The sentence beginning “In the next stage after noodles dics are formed” is awkwardly structured, and punctuation around “cups .Vegetables” and the dash before “After that” is inconsistent. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and use a clear passive pattern consistently when describing each stage.
