IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the procedure of manufacturing instant noodles. Overall, The process is divided into 8 steps starting from storage silos to ending with labelling and selling of noddles.
The first step in manufacturing of instant noodle is storing flour in storage silos. The flour is then added into mixer with water and oil to make it soft. Afterward, Roller is rolled on the dough sheets to make it even. Dough sheets are passed through a new process which convert sheets to dough strips. To make it easier to cook, It is then transformed into noodles discs. After cooking in oil, the noodles discs are dried to put it in cups.
Vegetables and spices are added in cups. The final step is to label cups with proper packaging which makes it ready for end user to buy instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage and mixing through cooking, drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it says there are eight steps and that the process ends with “labelling and selling,” whereas the diagram shows labelling and sealing before the finished cups emerge; selling is not shown. Some stages are also unclear or omitted, particularly the formation of noodle discs and the final sealing stage. The response is 139 words, below the required 150, so it has limited space to report the process fully. Add a precise overview and describe each major transition shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally sensible order, moving from flour storage to the later packaging stages, and paragraphing separates the overview from the process details. Sequencing words such as “The first step,” “Afterward,” and “The final step” help the reader follow the stages. However, some links between stages are unclear: “To make it easier to cook, It is then transformed into noodles discs” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to or explain the transition. The overview also says the process ends with labelling and selling, while the final paragraph describes packaging and the end user. Use clearer references and connect each stage explicitly, while keeping the sequence consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “vegetables and spices,” so the main subject is understandable. However, the range is somewhat limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Roller is rolled on the dough sheets” is an awkward description of the machinery, while “proper packaging” and “ready for end user to buy” introduce wording not shown in the diagram. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “noddles” and “instant noodle.” Aim for precise process verbs and accurate labels from the visual, for example “pass through rollers,” “are shaped into discs,” and “sealed in cups.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “The flour is then added into mixer with water and oil to make it soft.” The sequence is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles and number are inconsistent in phrases such as “into mixer,” “instant noodle,” and “Vegetables and spices are added in cups.” There is also a subject–verb agreement error in “a new process which convert sheets,” and the capitalisation of “The” and “It” after commas is incorrect. Try to maintain accurate passive forms throughout a process description, and check articles, plural nouns, and agreement. These corrections would make the stages clearer and more controlled.
