IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

the diagram illustrates the sequetial industrial process involved in the manufacture of instant cup noodles, spanning eight diffrent stages from raw materials to the packedged good.

overall the manufacturing process is fully automated and continous, transforming raw flous into packedged noodles. the operation begins with the storage and the mixing of the basic ingredients, followed by shaping, cooking and the drying before conducting the final assembly, flavouring and sealing.

the initial stages, flous is delivered by truck which is then stored in storage silos which the is mixed by watter and turned into a dough, the dough is further sent trhought large rollers where it is pressed, where the pressed sheets of the dough is later truned into stips which is again later turned into noodle discs.

these dics afre then cooked and dried, which are finaly sent for packaging, where the discs are kept in the cups on top of whch the vegetables and the spices are kept into the containers, after the packaging the noodles are then sealed and labled, completing thr product for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, and final packaging, and your overview identifies the broad transformation from raw ingredients to finished cups. This is relevant and gives the reader a clear sense of the process. Some details, however, are less fully or accurately explained: the diagram shows water and oil entering the mixer, but you mention only water, and the order of adding vegetables and spices is unclear in “the discs are kept in the cups on top of which…” The process is also described as “fully automated,” which is not explicitly established by the diagram. To strengthen the response, report the stages precisely and make the overview focus on the linear sequence and the final cup-filling, labelling, and sealing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early production stages and then the final packaging stages. Sequencing expressions such as “overall,” “the initial stages,” and “these” help guide the reader, and the process is generally presented in the correct order. This meets the lower-band expectation of clear overall organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, the final two body sections are compressed into long sentences, and references such as “which” and “these discs” are not always easy to follow. Paragraphing the stages more clearly and using explicit links such as “Next” and “Finally” would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on repeated or ambiguous references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “manufacture,” “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough,” “cooked,” and “sealed,” which allows the main stages to be understood. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “industrial process” and “final assembly.” However, spelling errors are conspicuous, including “sequetial,” “diffrent,” “flous,” “trhought,” and “labled,” and some word choices or combinations are inaccurate, such as “packedged good” and “conducting the final assembly.” These errors reduce precision and make the vocabulary less controlled. Check spelling carefully and prefer standard process collocations, for example, “the dough is passed through rollers” and “the finished product is packaged.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is then stored” and a sequence of passive constructions describing how the dough is shaped and cooked. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “the initial stages, flour is delivered” lacks a suitable introductory structure, while “the pressed sheets … is later turned” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The long sentence beginning “the initial stages” also combines several actions without clear grammatical boundaries, and articles and plurals are not consistently controlled. Use shorter, complete sentences for each stage, check agreement between subjects and verbs, and review punctuation around clauses.
