IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram outlines the stages involved in manufacturing instant noodles in a factory.

Overall, the process of producing instant noodles consists of eight stages beginning with storage silos and ending with labeling and sealing the product. Nevertheless, numerous stages use several machineries for this purpose.

Initially, flour is collected in the storage silos; it is then forwarded to the mixer where water and oil is added in the material. Furthermore, rollers are used to make dough sheets which is then converted to the thin dough strips using the same rollers later.

In the fifth stage, these strips are ultimately forwarded to the next discs for making noodles and then the disc adds oil and dry it for the further procedure. Subsequently, some vegetables and flavored spices are added in the noodle cups and finally forwarded to the final step where those cups are sealed and labelled. Thus, a noodle company produce the instant cup noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as a sequence and provide an overview with a clear start and finish, while also mentioning key inputs such as flour, water and oil, and the addition of vegetables and spices. Most stages are represented, but some are less fully or accurately described. For example, the overview says the process ends with “labeling and sealing,” although finished cups then emerge on a conveyor; the final stage is better described as packaging the completed product. The account of the cooking stage is also unclear: “the disc adds oil and dry it” does not accurately explain that the noodle discs are cooked in oil and dried. Include the rollers and the conversion from dough sheets to strips more precisely, and make the overview cover the full process.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in sequence, with paragraph breaks helping to separate the summary from the details. Linking expressions such as “Initially,” “Furthermore,” and “Subsequently” make the progression easy to follow, and the reader can generally track the production line. This already shows some flexibility beyond a purely mechanical list. However, a few links and references are awkward or unclear, particularly “the disc adds oil and dry it” and “finally forwarded to the final step,” where the subject and relationship between stages are difficult to follow. Use clearer references to the noodles or cups and avoid repeating “final” to make cohesion more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “sealed and labelled.” These terms help convey the main stages, and “forwarded” and “converted” show attempts to vary the wording. Some choices, however, are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram: “numerous stages use several machineries” is an awkward collocation, “next discs” does not clearly identify the noodle discs, and “flavored spices” is imprecise. “A noodle company produce” also uses an unsuitable form and phrasing. Prefer exact process terms and natural collocations, such as “the noodles are formed into discs” and “vegetables and seasonings are added.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is then converted” and a sequence joined with “where.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “water and oil is added” and “a noodle company produce”; the plural subject and singular subject respectively require different verb forms. There is also a mismatch in “dough sheets which is then converted,” and “the disc adds oil and dry it” shifts awkwardly between singular and plural reference. Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “forwarded to the next discs.” Check agreement, pronoun reference, and verb forms when revising, while retaining the range of sentence structures you are attempting.
