IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The visual representation shows the procedure of how instant noodles are manufactured in the industry. The noodles manufacturing process involves several ingredients and different stages that turns raw flour into noodles.
Initially, the flour is collected from the storage silos where flour is stored in bulk quantity, the flour is transfered to mixer. In the mixing stage, the flour is treated with a mixture of water and oil. The flour, water and oil mixture is rolled over large sheets to created dough sheets. Then, this dough is processed into another process which cuts the dough into dough strips. In the fifth stage, the dough strips are placed in to noodles dics.
Then, these noodles discs are pre-cooked with a small amount of oil and dried. The Noodles packet also contains a mixture of vegetables and spices, these are added in the noodles cups before the last stage. In the last stage, when noodles cups are weighted and are ready for packing, they are labelled according to their weight & flavor respectively and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You describe the process in sequence, from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and adding vegetables and spices, so the main stages are recognisable. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear: the opening says the process has several ingredients and stages but does not summarise its overall progression from flour to sealed cups. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported by the diagram. For example, it does not show noodles being weighed, labels indicating weight or flavour, or a “small amount” of oil; nor does it say the flour is collected from the silos. The account also gives limited detail about the rollers and the final cups emerging on a conveyor. A more accurate overview and fuller reporting of the visible stages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, and the two paragraphs move from preparation and shaping to cooking and packaging. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Then,” and “In the last stage” help the reader follow the process. This coherent arrangement meets the expected standard, and the paragraph break is appropriate. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “this dough is processed into another process” repeats the same idea rather than explaining the transition, while “The Noodles packet also contains…” shifts abruptly from the process to a product description. The final sentence combines weighing, labelling and sealing in a way that obscures the order. Use clearer stage-to-stage links and keep each sentence focused on one step.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “pre-cooked” and “sealed.” These terms make the manufacturing sequence understandable, and you attempt more specific wording such as “according to their weight & flavor.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing the diagram: “collected from the storage silos” does not precisely describe flour being transferred from them, and “processed into another process” is repetitive. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “transfered,” “dics” and “created” where “create” is needed. Prefer precise verbs such as “fed,” “formed” and “packaged,” and check spelling and collocations to make the description more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including the time clause “when noodles cups are weighted and are ready for packing,” and the sequence is generally understandable. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction remain. In “different stages that turns raw flour,” the plural subject requires “turn”; “to created dough sheets” should use the base form after “to”; and “the flour is transfered” needs the correct past participle form. The sentence beginning “The Noodles packet also contains…” joins two independent ideas with a comma, making the connection unclear. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and divide or connect clauses more accurately.
