IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given flow diagram illustrates the process of instant noodles manufacturing.

Overall, the production of instant noodles is accompanied by 8 considerable steps in a factory majorly involving mechanical processing, seasoning and labelling. Instant noodles have gained its popularity over the past decade. First step includes taking flour from storage silos by a heavy-duty vehicle. The vehicle transports the raw material to the factory to get the final product. Mechanical process is initiated as soon as water and oil is mixed in a mixer. Rollers are fixed with mixer machines to convert the flour into dough sheets. Dough strips result as the next main manufacturing product which is then placed onto the noodles discs. Cooking oil is added in discs and drying process is carried out. Noodles cups were placed besides the discs and vegetables and spices are added for seasoning. Specific labels are diplayed on cups accompanied by sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having eight stages and give a relevant overview of its mechanical, seasoning and packaging elements. Several early and late stages are included, such as flour entering from storage silos, mixing, and labelling and sealing. However, some central details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough strips are not “placed onto the noodles discs”; rather, they are formed into noodle discs before cooking. The account also suggests that cups are placed beside the discs, whereas the cooked noodles move into cups as vegetables and spices are added. The overview is useful, but the sequence and transformations need more precise reporting. Avoid unrelated background such as the popularity of instant noodles, and describe each stage in the diagram’s order.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows a broadly chronological order, moving from flour storage through processing to packaging, and the opening overview helps orient the reader. However, the stages are compressed into one paragraph, so the progression is harder to follow than it needs to be. Some links between steps are unclear: “Dough strips result as the next main manufacturing product which is then placed onto the noodles discs” does not clearly show how strips become discs. The repeated use of “then” and “as” also makes connections feel mechanical, while “First step includes” does not lead into a consistently signposted sequence. Group the process into clear stages and use precise transitions such as “Next,” “After shaping,” and “Finally,” while ensuring each reference clearly identifies the product or machine.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably varied range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mechanical processing,” “seasoning,” “rollers,” and “sealing.” This is appropriate to the diagram and generally communicates the topic. Some less common choices are not natural or precise in context: “considerable steps” is an awkward collocation, “heavy-duty vehicle” adds an unsupported description, and “displayed” does not accurately describe labels being applied. There are also spelling and word-form slips, notably “diplayed,” and “noodles manufacturing” is less natural than “noodle manufacture.” To strengthen the range further, favour exact process verbs such as “form,” “feed,” “cook,” and “package,” and avoid decorative wording that does not add factual information.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and tense. For example, “First step includes” needs an article, while “instant noodles have gained its popularity” has a pronoun-agreement problem. The shift to past forms in “Noodles cups were placed” and “seasoning” does not fit a process description, which is normally reported in the present simple. Sentence construction also becomes unclear in “Dough strips result as the next main manufacturing product which is then placed onto the noodles discs.” Use present-tense passive forms consistently where appropriate, and check that singular and plural subjects match their verbs. These revisions would make the sequence easier to interpret.
