IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The presented diagram explicates that the how instant noodles are produced.
Overall, it can be witnessed that the making of noodles contains several steps. This process is quite lengthy. The process starts from storage of flour and then it goes from various stages after that finally noodles are obtained.
To commence with, this process starts from when flour is stored in storage silos and then water and oil is added in the mixer and mixture is produced then the mixture is converted into the Dough sheets with help of rollers. In next phase the sheets are converted into Dough strips.
Furthermore, analyzing the diagram the data reveals that the noodles dough strips are placed into the Noodles discs where they are cooked in oil and then dryed. After that some vvegetables and some spices are added into the cups in which the noodle strips are. In last part they are passed to the the labels for labelling and sealing process. Finaly instant noodles are made.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging. The overview also recognises that the process has multiple stages and ends with finished noodles. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough strips are formed into noodle discs, rather than being “placed into the Noodles discs,” and the cups are filled with noodles before vegetables and spices are added. The account also omits the distinct stages of shaping dough into sheets and then strips in places, and does not clearly explain the final product emerging from the conveyor. A more precise overview and clearer reporting of each transformation would make the main features more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the earlier and later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “To commence with,” “Furthermore,” and “After that” help the reader follow the process. Overall, the stages are presented in a broadly logical order. However, some links are mechanical, and several long sentences join multiple steps without clear punctuation, as in the description of mixing, producing sheets, and forming strips. References such as “they” and “the noodle strips” are not always clear, particularly in the packaging section. Use shorter, clearly punctuated sentences and connect each stage explicitly to the next; this would improve progression and make the relationships between ingredients, noodles, and cups easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “Dough sheets,” “cooked,” and “labelling and sealing.” This gives the response an adequate range for describing the diagram. However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise: “the data reveals” is unsuitable for a process diagram, and “placed into the Noodles discs” does not accurately describe the transformation. There are also spelling errors, including “dryed,” “vvegetables,” and “Finaly,” alongside unnecessary repetition of “process” and “noodles.” Choose precise verbs such as “formed,” “cut,” and “packaged,” and check spelling and capitalisation to make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a passive construction in “the mixture is converted into the Dough sheets,” which is appropriate for describing a manufacturing process. However, grammatical control is uneven, and some sentences contain several errors or become difficult to follow. For example, “the how instant noodles are produced” has an unnecessary article and an incorrect clause structure; “water and oil is added” has subject–verb disagreement; and “the process starts from when” is an awkward grammatical pattern. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “In last part they are passed to the the labels.” Practise accurate passive forms and divide multi-stage descriptions into complete, well-punctuated sentences.
