IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The figure illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles at a factory. Overall, the synthesis involves the series of multiple interconnected steps.
Initially, the trucks accomodate the flour supply o the storage silos. Following this, the mixing begins. In rollers, the mixture for noddles is prepared through adding two prominent yet the basic ingredients such as water and oil. The water and oil facilitates the flour mixing eventually ending up into solid dough. The dough is then pressed to attain the plain sheets with subsequent conversion into strips.
After that, the respective strips are sticked togather in disc shape assissted by cooking oil and drying. After synthesis, the packaging starts, where each single noddle disc is placed in cups containg additional ingredients (vegetables and spices) for flavouring. Lastly, the label and seal on each single item is placed, making them ready for selling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding flavourings, and packaging. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the flour is transported by truck to the silos, rather than the trucks accommodating the supply, and the dough is formed into discs before cooking; the discs are not made by sticking strips together. The overview is also general (“a series of multiple interconnected steps”) rather than highlighting the main progression from raw flour to sealed cups. The response is 143 words, below the required 150, and several stages—especially the rollers and the separate labelling and sealing stage—could be reported more precisely. Develop these features to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression, signalled by “Initially,” “Following this,” “After that,” and “Lastly,” and the stages are presented in a sensible order. The opening overview and subsequent process description also give the reader a basic structure. This meets the expectation of coherent organisation, while some links between ideas remain unclear or mechanical. For example, “In rollers” makes the relationship between mixing and the rollers difficult to follow, and “After synthesis” is an imprecise transition into packaging. Paragraphing is limited, but the sequence is still understandable. To strengthen progression further, group the stages into clear phases—preparing and shaping the dough, cooking, then cup filling and sealing—and use references that make each machine or product stage explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “conversion,” “ingredients,” “flavouring,” and “packaging,” and the reader can generally understand the intended stages. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “subsequent conversion,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context. “Accommodate” does not describe transporting flour, “stick together” misrepresents how the discs are formed, and “synthesis” is not a natural term for this manufacturing process. Spelling errors such as “noddle,” “togather,” and “assissted” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process verbs and standard collocations, such as “is conveyed,” “is cut into strips,” and “is shaped into discs,” rather than using formal-sounding words that do not fit.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “where each single noddle disc is placed in cups” and the participle phrase “making them ready for selling.” Most of the sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “the water and oil facilitates,” the plural subject requires “facilitate”; “ending up into solid dough” has an awkward verb pattern; and “the label and seal … is placed” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “In rollers” also lacks a clear grammatical connection between the mixing and rolling stages. Work on agreement, verb patterns, and articles, and check that each sentence clearly identifies what is being acted on. More accurate complex sentences would improve control.
