IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of how instant noodles are produced.
Overall, There are eight steps in the process of making instant noodles. Manufacturing requires flour, water, oil, vegetables and spices.
The first six steps visualize the process of making instant noodles. The procedure starts by taking flour from the storage. Flour is mixed with water and oil in a mixer to create dough. Next step is to create dough sheets by the help of rollers. Afterwards, dough sheets are cut as stripes by the machine. This helps to make the noddles discs. Therefore, in the sixth step, noodles discs are cooked with oil and then dried for further procedure.
The last two steps show the packaging of instant noodles. When the noodles discs become dry, discs are kept in the cups. There, the vegetables and spices are added in the cup. The steps end with labelling and sealing the cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the process as a sequence and give a useful overview of its ingredients and broad stages, then describe the main production and packaging phases. Most steps are reported accurately, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, and cooking and drying the noodle discs. The account is not fully precise in places: flour is taken “from the storage” rather than conveyed from storage silos, and the diagram shows the vegetables and spices being added as the noodles enter cups, not that the dry discs are first placed in cups and then seasoned. The overview also says there are eight steps, while the diagram includes intermediate stages such as rollers and the formation of sheets, strips and discs. More exact sequencing and a clearer overview of the transformation from flour to packaged cups would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview, production paragraph and packaging paragraph. Its progression is easy to follow, and sequencing expressions such as “The first six steps,” “Next,” “Afterwards” and “The last two steps” help guide the reader through the process. The division between manufacture and packaging is particularly effective. Some links are less precise: “This helps to make the noddles discs” does not clearly explain the transition from strips to discs, while “Therefore” is not the most natural connector for the next stage in a process. The repeated use of “steps” also makes the progression somewhat mechanical. Use a wider range of accurate process links and make each sentence’s connection to the preceding stage explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “mixed,” “rollers,” “cut,” “cooked,” “dried,” “labelling” and “sealing,” so the manufacturing sequence is generally understandable. There are also some attempts at more specific wording, such as “dough sheets” and “noodles discs.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “taking flour from the storage,” “cut as stripes,” and “kept in the cups” do not describe the diagram as naturally as “conveyed from storage silos,” “cut into strips,” and “placed in cups.” “Noddles” is also misspelled, and “visualize” is not the best verb for describing stages in a diagram. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent use of the diagram’s labels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “When the noodles discs become dry, discs are kept in the cups” and “Flour is mixed with water and oil in a mixer to create dough.” Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors persist. The overview begins “Overall, There,” with an unnecessary capital after the comma. “Next step is to create…” is missing a determiner, and “dough sheets are cut as stripes” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. The sentence about the dry discs also has an unclear subject and awkward passive construction. Try varying sentence structures while checking articles, prepositions and passive forms; for example, “The dough is then cut into strips, which are shaped into noodle discs.”
