IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process illustrates the manufacturing of instant noodles in various stages.
Overall, it can be seen that the noodles had been made in a proper way. It is done through a special machine in many steps as taking flour from storage silos till labeling and sealing of cups.
In the initial stage, the flour is transported from storage silos by truck to a factory. Secondly, the flour is transferred into a mixer machine for kneeding, whereas the water and oil is added into machine to make a smooth dough, then the dough goes into roller where it is transformed into sheets and then in strips shape.
Moreover, the strips are placed on the disk where they will be put into oil to cook them, here the cooking and drying process continued, subsequently, the noodles are poured into separate cups and mixed together with vegetable and spices. Finally, they sealed the cups and labeled them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence from flour storage through to sealing and labelling, and your overview recognises that it involves several stages. Most of the main production steps are included, including mixing, forming sheets and strips, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the flour is delivered by truck to the storage silos, not transported from the silos by truck, and the noodles are formed into discs before cooking rather than placed on a “disk.” The final stage also needs clearer reporting: cups are filled with noodles and additions, then labelled and sealed. Your overview, “made in a proper way,” is too general to summarise the process’s main features; describe the transformation from flour to packaged cups instead.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, an overview and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “In the initial stage,” “Moreover” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from mixing to packaging is generally easy to understand. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some movement towards more flexible cohesion. However, some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely: “Secondly” is followed by several stages in one sentence, while “Moreover” does not clearly signal the next chronological step. The long sentence beginning “whereas the water and oil…” also makes the sequence harder to track. Use shorter stage-focused sentences and consistent transitions such as “Next” and “After this.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “roller,” “sheets,” “strips,” “cooking and drying,” and “labeling and sealing.” These terms make the general manufacturing sequence understandable, and you attempt more specific language such as “transferred” and “transformed.” Some choices are imprecise or do not fit the diagram: “placed on the disk” confuses the noodle discs with a surface, and “poured into separate cups” does not accurately describe the noodles entering cups. “Made in a proper way” is also vague for an overview. There are spelling and word-form slips, including “kneeding” (intended as “kneading”) and “vegetable” where the plural “vegetables” is needed. Aim for precise process collocations and use the diagram’s labels where helpful.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “where they will be put into oil” and a sequence joined with “whereas” and “then.” The main stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “the water and oil is added” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “they sealed the cups” shifts to an unclear active subject and past tense; a passive form such as “the cups are then sealed” would suit a process description. The phrase “the cooking and drying process continued” also shifts tense, while “into machine” needs an article. Break up the longer sentences and use the present simple passive consistently for stages performed by machinery.
