IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles for commercial usage.
Overall, the process is carried out in three main steps that are mixing, cooking and sealing.
Initially, the floor has been stored into the stroage silos in bulk quantity which was trasported through trucks. An industrial mixer is used to mix floor along with water and oil to form a dough. These doughs are being transfered to dough sheets which is been rolled to form dough strips which further form noodles discs.
At sixth stage, noodles discs are been cooked with oil and dryed before its distribution in cups. Cups, now have noodles along with its condemments like vegetables and spices.
Lastly, noodle cups were been labled first and then sealed with plastic wraper. The final product is now labeled and sealed to send into the commercial markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as manufacturing instant noodles and give a basic overview of mixing, cooking and sealing, then describe several stages in sequence. However, the overview is incomplete: it omits the shaping stages and the addition of vegetables and spices, and the final stage is misreported as labelling before sealing with plastic wrap. The diagram shows labels being added during the labelling-and-sealing stage, not a separate order or a specified plastic wrapper. Some details are also unclear, such as how the dough becomes sheets, strips and discs. The response is 140 words, below the required 150, so it does not fully meet the task requirement. Include the full sequence and a more accurate overview, with a little more detail on the later stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing the process from the initial storage stage to the finished cups. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “At sixth stage” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the general order. However, the overview groups the process into three steps without accounting for several important stages, and the final paragraph’s sequence is not fully consistent with the diagram. Some references are also unclear, particularly “These doughs,” which does not clearly identify the material being transferred. Use clearer links between each stage and organise the body so that the full process progresses from flour storage through to the finished product.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “noodles discs” and “commercial markets,” which helps communicate the topic. There is also an attempt to use more formal wording, such as “manufacturing” and “industrial.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “stroage,” “trasported,” “transfered,” “dryed” and “labled,” and some word choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “floor” is used for “flour,” while “condemments” appears to mean “condiments.” “Commercial usage” and “in bulk quantity” are also awkward in this context. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling carefully; this will make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which was trasported through trucks” and a sequence of clauses describing dough formation. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some parts difficult to follow. For example, “These doughs are being transfered to dough sheets which is been rolled” has problems with tense, agreement and the relationship between the material and the sheets. “Cups, now have noodles” also has an unnecessary comma, and “noodle cups were been labled” uses an incorrect verb form. Use consistent present simple for a process description, and check subject–verb agreement and passive constructions, such as “the dough is transferred” and “the cups are labelled and sealed.”
