IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the production of noodles in different stages.
Overall, the noodles are manufactured in five stages. It includes mixing, rolling, compression, cooking and drying. The process started with the mixing of flour and ended up with the cooking of noodles.
Initially, the flour is collected from the storage silos and transported with the help of vehicle to the noodles factory. Afterwards, the flour is mixed with water and oil to form mixture in the mixer. In the next step, the mixture undergo through roller machine to convert in to dough sheets. The dough sheets are transformed to long dough strips. Subsequently, the noodles disc are used to prepare the shape of noodles. Then the noodles are cooked and dried with the addition of oil. These instant noodles are poured in different cups where vegetables and spices are added. Eventually, the cups are labelled and sealed to transform these cups to market for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking, and cup preparation, and the sequence is generally recognisable. However, the overview says there are “five stages,” although the diagram shows a longer production line, and it incorrectly says the process ends with cooking; the final stages are adding vegetables and spices, then labelling and sealing. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate: the flour is delivered by truck to the silos, rather than transported from them to the factory, and the noodles are formed into discs before cooking. To strengthen the summary, give an accurate overview of the full process and report each key transformation in order, including the final packaging stage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression, moving from an introduction and overview into a sequence of stages. Time markers such as “Initially,” “Afterwards,” “In the next step,” and “Eventually” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are mostly presented in the correct order. This provides a coherent arrangement. However, the overview conflicts with the final sentence by claiming that production ends with cooking, and some links between stages are compressed—for example, the transition from dough strips to noodle discs is not fully explained. Grouping the stages into clearer phases and ensuring the overview matches the body would make the progression more consistent and the cohesion less dependent on repeated sequencing phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “cooked and dried,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms help communicate the manufacturing sequence, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “compression” is not a clear description of a stage shown in the diagram, “the noodles disc are used to prepare the shape of noodles” is awkward, and “transform these cups to market for sale” does not express the final packaging stage naturally. Aim for precise process verbs and standard collocations, such as noodles being shaped into discs and finished cups being prepared for distribution. This would improve accuracy without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple sentences and more complex forms, including “where vegetables and spices are added,” and the sequence is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, though they rarely prevent the reader from following the process. For example, “the mixture undergo through roller machine” has an incorrect verb form and missing article; “the noodles disc are” has a number-agreement problem; and “the flour is mixed with water and oil to form mixture” needs an article. The overview also shifts awkwardly between “The process started” and the present-tense description used elsewhere. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent present tense, and revise sentence patterns such as “the mixture passes through rollers” to improve control.
