IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The image frame shows the process of quick manufacturing of noodles. In which the start to end process is described in 8 steps that are are performed in the factory to complete the manufacturing of noodles.
Overall, the complete process is very easy and quick to make noodles like initially wheat powder is added to storage silos and then make the liquid in form of fluid by adding water and oil and silos and mix them up in a mixer. After that dough sheet comes out from mixer.Dough sheets are then converted to dough strips and passed on.On next step the strips are converted to discs and these discs are cooked in oil to convert them into solid form when they are dried. Then the process of adding vegetable spices are held and place the noodles in cups. The last step is labelling and sealing the cups.
This is complete process of making noodles and I think its definitely a very easy and Instant way of manufacturing noodles in a short time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and cover several key stages, including flour storage, mixing, forming dough sheets and strips, cooking and drying, adding vegetables and spices, and sealing the cups. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear or accurate: calling the process “very easy and quick” is an unsupported judgement, and the response says there are eight steps without clearly distinguishing the stages shown. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate, such as saying the mixer makes “the liquid” and that the noodles are cooked “to convert them into solid form.” To improve, give a concise factual overview of the full progression from flour delivery to finished cups, then describe the stages precisely and avoid claims about speed or ease that the diagram does not show.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall sequence, and the use of “Overall,” “After that,” “On next step,” and “The last step” helps the reader follow the process. However, progression is weakened by a long, crowded overview sentence that combines several stages, while the final paragraph repeats the general point that this is a complete and easy process rather than adding useful information. Some links are also unclear: “and silos and mix them up” makes the relationship between the ingredients and mixer difficult to follow. Organise the report into a clear introduction, a concise overview, and a body that groups the stages in order. Use linking phrases selectively and make sure each sentence advances the description.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “discs,” and “labelling and sealing,” so the main stages are generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “quick manufacturing,” “wheat powder,” “make the liquid in form of fluid,” and “the process … are held.” Repetition of “process,” “noodles,” and “step” also limits precision. Choose terms that match the diagram, such as “flour,” “mix,” “form,” and “are added,” and use more precise verbs to describe each transformation. Avoid evaluative wording like “very easy” when reporting a diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and uses sequencing clauses, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between stages difficult to understand. For example, “The image frame shows the process … noodles. In which” creates a sentence fragment, while “Overall, the complete process … and silos and mix them up” has faulty sentence structure. There are also problems with agreement and verb forms in “the process … are held” and “vegetable spices are … place.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and several sentences run together without clear boundaries. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine stages with accurate clauses. Check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and punctuation before finishing.
