IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram desribes how the noodles prepared in industries.

Overall, by using flour they make dough and then make sheets of this and convert it into strips. Thes strips cooked, dried and then after adding some spices and vegetables, they sealed it into the packs or cups.

Firstly, the flour is taken from storage area and transfor it to the noodle factory through truck. This flour is mixed with specific amount of water and oil through the mixer. Dough sheets are rooled when passed through the rooler. These dough sheets then converted into thin dough strips. These are passing through the noodles discs where these changed into round shapes. Now, these noodles cooked in small amount of oil and then dried for sometime. After this, they add some spices and vegetables in noodles and keep them in the cups. These cups then labelled with paper and sealed and get out of the machine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages and give a clear overview: flour is made into dough, shaped into strips, cooked and dried, then combined with vegetables and spices before packaging. The sequence is broadly accurate, and the overview helps identify the process from raw material to finished cups. Some details, however, are less fully or precisely reported. For example, the diagram shows flour being delivered by truck to storage silos, then sent to the mixer; your account says it is taken from a “storage area” and transported “through truck,” which blurs that order. The shaping stages are also unclear when you say the strips pass through “noodles discs.” To strengthen the response, describe the rollers, dough sheets, strips and discs as distinct stages, and avoid adding unsupported details such as a “specific amount” or “small amount” of oil.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an overview is followed by a chronological account beginning with flour and ending with sealed cups. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Now” and “After this” help the reader follow the process. The paragraphing is also appropriate, separating the summary from the detailed stages. However, some links are mechanical, and a few references make the sequence harder to follow. In “These are passing through the noodles discs where these changed into round shapes,” the repeated “these” does not clearly distinguish the strips from the discs. The overview also compresses several stages into one sentence. Use clearer references such as “the strips” and “the resulting noodle discs,” and connect each stage explicitly to the next to make progression more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “mixer,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “cooked,” “dried,” “labelled” and “sealed,” so the reader can understand the general manufacturing sequence. There is some variation in how you describe the stages, but the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Noodles prepared in industries” is an awkward description of the process, while “through truck” and “rooled through the rooler” show problems with collocation and spelling. “Noodles discs” also does not clearly name the product at that stage. Aim for precise process terms and natural combinations, such as “delivered by truck,” “passed through rollers” and “formed into noodle discs.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would make the description more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the sequence of clauses describing mixing, shaping and packaging. The main meaning is generally recoverable, but control is inconsistent, and errors occur in several sentence patterns. For example, “Thes strips cooked” is missing an auxiliary verb, and “they sealed it” shifts into an unclear past-tense construction after the present-tense process description. “These are passing through … where these changed” mixes verb forms, while “they add … and keep them” changes the grammatical subject without a clear reference. Use the present simple consistently for a process (“the strips are cooked,” “the cups are labelled and sealed”), and check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these forms would make the stages easier to follow.
