IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The digram indicates that how the packaged noodles are prepared in a factory. The steps that are followed in the making of the noodles are given in a sequence to understand the production process.

Firstly, their are storage silos in which flour is stored. The flour is then poured into a mixer with some oil and water. The mixer is attached with rollers. The mixture go through the rollers and take shape of dough sheets, these dough sheets move from a cutter which cut them in stripes.

In addition to that, the dough stripes move foward and go through a process where they are converted into noodles discs. These discs are then fried in oil and are dried afterwards.

Furthermore, these noodles are then moved into a paper cup and then some dried vegetables and some other spices for enhancing the flavor of noodles are added in the cup with noodles but the vegetables and spices are in their own wrappings so that they can be used even after a long time.

Lastly, the noodles are labled and sealed and are ready to be transported to the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You describe the main sequence from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and packaging, so the response is relevant to the process. However, the account only partially covers the diagram’s key features and lacks a clear overview of the process as a whole. Some details are inaccurate or invented: the diagram shows noodles placed in cups with vegetables and spices added, but does not show paper cups or the ingredients being separately wrapped; transport to market is also not depicted. The rollers, which form the dough sheets, and the final emergence of sealed cups are not clearly reported. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview and describe each stage precisely, without adding unsupported details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are presented in a generally understandable order, and paragraph breaks help separate parts of the process. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition to that,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” guide the reader through the account. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and the long sentence beginning “Furthermore” combines several actions and extra information, making the sequence harder to follow. Some references, such as “these discs” and “these noodles,” are understandable but could be more precise. Group the stages into clear phases—preparation and shaping, cooking, then cup filling and sealing—and use concise transitions that show how one stage leads to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” and “sealed,” which helps communicate the manufacturing stages. There is also some attempt to vary wording with “converted” and “enhancing the flavor.” However, spelling errors such as “digram,” “foward,” and “labled,” along with “stripes” for the intended noodle strips, reduce accuracy. Some expressions are imprecise or informal for a process description, including “some other spices” and “ready to be transported to the market.” Aim for consistent technical terms and precise verbs, such as “cut into strips,” “formed into discs,” and “packaged,” while checking spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer, connected structures, and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, some errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For example, “The digram indicates that how” uses an incorrect clause pattern, while “their are storage silos” and “The mixture go” show errors in agreement or word form within the sentence. The opening also runs two sentences together after “factory,” and several sentences lack spaces after full stops. The long sentence about the cups and ingredients is difficult to control. Practise accurate passive forms suited to process descriptions, such as “the dough is cut into strips,” and divide complex information into shorter, correctly punctuated sentences.
