IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The processing diagram illustrates the several steps which are being followed to make instant noodles.

Overall, there are eight steps to make instant noodles from raw flour to readymade noodles packed in a cup

Firstly, a bulk truck which is carry flour is unloaded into the flour silos. From silos, raw flour are put into a mixer where water and oil are also being added. When flour, water and oil are mixed in to each other they are going through the rollers and shaped like sheets. Then the sheets sheared into strips.

In step 5 the flour strips bacome disc of noodles. After that noodles discs are being cooked with oil and dry to prepare them for the next steps. When the noodle discs are compleately ready for the packaging vegetables and spices are added with them. All these are filled in cups and get through on a convyer to seal the cups and level on to the cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from flour storage through mixing, shaping, cooking and packaging, and your overview identifies the transformation from raw flour to noodles in cups. Most details match the diagram, including the addition of water and oil and the later addition of vegetables and spices. However, some stages are compressed or unclear: the account does not clearly explain that the strips are formed into noodle discs before cooking, and the final description blurs the addition of ingredients, filling the cups, and labelling and sealing. A more precise overview and fuller reporting of these final stages would make the process more complete and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall sequence, supported by paragraphing and time markers such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “After that.” The reader can generally follow the process from the silos to the finished cups. However, the final paragraph contains several stages in one long sequence, so the relationship between adding vegetables and spices, filling cups, and labelling and sealing is not always clear. Some links also feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Then” and “After that.” Grouping the stages into clearer sections and using more precise references to each product as it moves through the process would strengthen progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “strips,” and “packaging,” which helps communicate the diagram. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “shaped like sheets.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “a bulk truck which is carry flour” and “get through on a convyer” do not express the process naturally. Spelling errors such as “bacome,” “compleately,” and “level” for “label” also reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Choose standard process verbs such as “transported,” “formed,” and “sealed,” and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a time clause beginning “When flour, water and oil are mixed…” and a sequence introduced by “After that.” The stages remain mostly understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “a bulk truck which is carry flour” has an incorrect verb form, while “raw flour are put” has subject–verb disagreement. Passive forms are also inconsistent: “the sheets sheared into strips” needs a passive verb, and “noodles discs are being cooked with oil and dry” is not accurately formed. Work on consistent passive constructions for describing a manufacturing process, as well as agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, to improve control.
