IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram illustrates the production steps involved in instant noodles.
At first step, flour which is used in making instant noodles is transported from storage silos to mixer chamber. At mixer chamber, water and oil are mixed with the flour. This mixture is then converted into dough sheets through rollers. These dogh sheets are converted into dogh strips though a special machine equipment.
These strips are then finally converted into noodles discs. These discs are cooked with oil in the machine. The cooked noodle discs are dried to collect them into the cups. In the cups, special vegetables and spices are then mixed with the cups. In this step, noodles age given special flavour. In the final step these noodle cups are then labelled with specific branding. This labelling are then sealed and the noodles are ready now ready to ship.
Overall, the manufacturing of instant noodles involved several steps, start from mixing of flour, water and oil and then dough strips are made. Noodles dics are then cooked and the given some spices. In final step, noodles cups are labelled and sealed with branding.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and cover the main stages, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, cooking the noodle discs, and adding vegetables and spices before packaging. This gives the reader a generally accurate account. However, some details are unclear or misrepresented: flour is transported from the truck to the storage silos, not from the silos to the mixer, and the cups are filled with noodles before vegetables and spices are added. The overview repeats several stages rather than clearly summarising the process from flour delivery through to finished, sealed cups. To strengthen the response, make that overall progression explicit and describe the final filling and packaging stages more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, and the paragraph break between the stage-by-stage account and the overview helps distinguish description from summary. Linking expressions such as “At first step,” “These strips are then,” and “In the final step” guide the reader through the process. This is a sound organisational foundation. However, the overview largely repeats details from the preceding paragraph, and some references are difficult to follow: “This labelling are then sealed” does not clearly identify what is sealed. The progression would be more effective if the overview briefly captured the full start-to-finish process and each stage were linked to its actual output, especially when the cups are filled and sealed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “production steps,” “converted,” “rollers,” “cooked,” “labelled,” and “sealed,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “mixer chamber” and “specific branding.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “collect them into the cups,” “mixed with the cups,” and “ready to ship.” Spelling errors such as “dogh,” “dics,” and “age” also reduce precision. Aim for standard process descriptions and check spelling carefully; accurate terms such as “formed into,” “placed in cups,” and “packaged” would make the account clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, “At mixer chamber, water and oil are mixed with the flour,” and use passive constructions that suit a manufacturing process. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “At first step” (missing an article), “This labelling are then sealed” (subject–verb agreement and unclear structure), and “the noodles are ready now ready to ship” (repetition and faulty construction). The overview also shifts awkwardly between “involved” and present-tense process description. Practise consistent present simple passive forms, and check each sentence for a clear subject, correctly matched verb, and complete grammatical structure.
