IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illutrates the complete of process of production of instant noodles .

At the start of process, there are storage silos where flour is transeferred to the silos, then there is mixinig stag. Here, water and oil is mixed with flour and shifted towards the rollers. The next process involves the formation of dough sheets. The dough sheets then converted to the dough strips. The dough strips finally resulted in noodles discs which will go through the process of cooking with oil and then drying. The refined noodles now transferred in cups where the additional vegetables and spices will be add up. At the end, there will be labelling and sealing stage where the labels will be tagged and the instant noodles are ready to transported.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main stages, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and final packaging, so the response is relevant to the process. However, the account is brief and does not provide a clear overview of the process as a whole or enough detail about key transitions. For example, it omits that the noodles are formed into discs before cooking and that cups are introduced when vegetables and spices are added. The final stage is also described imprecisely: labels are applied during labelling and sealing, rather than the noodles simply being “ready to transported.” The response is 126 words, below the required 150. Develop the overview and explain the stages more fully, using the diagram’s details accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are presented in a generally sensible order, and sequencing phrases such as “At the start,” “The next process,” and “At the end” help the reader follow the production line. This gives the response some overall organisation. However, it is written as one paragraph, and the repeated use of “then” and “The …” makes the progression somewhat mechanical. Some links between stages are also unclear, particularly “shifted towards the rollers” and the move from cooking and drying to cups. Group the stages into a short introduction/overview and a logically developed process description, and use clearer links to show how one product form becomes the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “noodles discs,” and “labelling and sealing,” which helps convey the subject. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, or collocation problems reduce precision: “complete of process,” “mixinig stag,” “refined noodles,” and “labels will be tagged” are not natural descriptions here. “Transferred” is also repeated, and “refined” does not accurately describe noodles after cooking. Aim for precise process verbs and standard collocations, such as “is fed into,” “is shaped into,” and “is packaged.” Check spelling carefully, especially for key terms, so the reader can understand each stage without hesitation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses a few different sentence patterns, including sequencing clauses and passive constructions, which are appropriate for describing a manufacturing process. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence structures as well as in longer clauses. Examples include “water and oil is mixed” (subject–verb agreement), “The dough sheets then converted” (missing auxiliary), and “will be add up” (incorrect passive verb form). The opening phrase “At the start of process” also lacks an article, while “ready to transported” needs a different verb construction. These errors sometimes make the relationships between stages less clear. Practise accurate passive forms in the present tense, which are especially useful for process descriptions, and proofread each sentence for a complete verb phrase.
